After my uncle cancelled my chores for today the choice was made to head south and meet Why-ting for a HB Jack sesh.
Hit the water at silly o'clock to be greeted with glassed out conditions. Air temp was a little cool with overcast clouds, but we still held hope with a water temp of 23 degrees.
The leccy down we motored, flicking surface lures until sun up for very little action. Quick change up and after sighting a miriad of bait on the surface Whytey's on to a nice fish. Grab the net to see a flash of silver before a nervous Trev surfaces with his mate in tow. Quick pics and released.
Not long after the big fella is on again, this time to what I think is a nice jack giving him some stick. Surprisingly a healthy cod enters the net at around 50cm. No time for a measure as the big fella was flat out holding the slimy sucker, but enough time to take a piccy.
Sensing a change I rig up the trusty bomber before the 1st of my 6 cod for the day hits the water.
As the day progressed we saw a few Jacks in hiding including 2 bigguns that just didn't wanna play despite lures being thrown at every angle and speed at them. It's about that time the inevitable cursing of the wind, the Jacks, the residents and the weather started. Sooo long without a single Jack strike or follow. Forget the fact that we'd boated 9 fish already, no jacks equal angry men!!!
With the wind coming up the D was made to take off, but not before Whytey changes up HB's again and calls "Jack" on the intended cast.
WHAM!! "I'm on.....................Rich, it's a Jack!!!!!!!!!" Heart thumping, I'm on the net.............Well, it's dark in colour mate...........Another cod.
That did it and we were off. On the way in, 2nd last pontoon and Whytey gets one deep up the pontoon when "flash-flash". That was it..............A single flash of red the whole day. The big fella was distraught and I was in tears. (of laughter that is)
10 fish for the morning all released.
Bring on a hotter days for next time. Hope you enjoyed the read.
Cheers, Richie
PS: thanx for the trip Why-ting. At least we boated fish and the Karma is all gone!
