At 1700hrs on Wednesday 27th December Sue and I and the dog were at the Broadacres Drive Boat Ramp ready to embark upon what has become an annual pilgrimage to the island! With quite heavy rain and a gently soueaster in our faces we were soaking wet after 40 minutes before reaching our camping spot . Not to be deterred and still with high spirits, we unpacked the boat and set up camp . The fly went up first and then the tent. "Where's the tent poles Dave????" Ummmmmmm.........yeah.........back under the house in Rocky! BUGGER!!!! That first night was cold, wet, miserable and bloody uncomfortable lying on a soaked mattress under the fly with the rain blowing in. > Next day we arranged for the tent poles to be delivered to the boat ramp and so from then on we had a very comfortable home away from home .
We through hard bodies, soft plastics, fresh dead baits, rotten dead baits, and live bait but the fish just didn't want to play. The same went for the muddies.
The 10 days was still very beautiful with cooler than normal weather, lots of overcast days, and intermittent showers. Terrific camping weather.
The new 40 hp 4 stroke went like a dream and our little 4.4 Savage Jabiru held her head high with pride of the new horsies on the back . Unfortunitely, the boat was never designed for some of the conditions we like to fish, and Sue and I are both still a little stiff from being bounced around and have had enough of getting wet. The hull is simply not designed for anything other than calm weather, rivers and creeks . Amazingly, it has kept us safe for many years and we have enjoyed it very much. Crossing the Wooli Bar in NSW on a run out tide with 3 metre greenies staring at you is a real test for any craft, but this little boat carried us through even that some years ago . This not in testament to my skills, rather bloody stupid to even attempt that crossing, but it is testimony to the worthiness of the Savage Jabiru which got us through and out the other side .
However, we feel it is time to upgrade to something around the same length but with a V hull and a bit more distance between the gunnels and the watery stuff. The new 40 will go on the next hull, and the 4.4 Savage Jab will be sold .
Anyway, we had a lovely break, a beautiful peaceful time even without the fish and the crabs. Being on the water is the game, catching things is only a bonus!
Cheers to all for a happy, safe and prosperous 2007 .
