Check out uniden, pretty good range of gear and priced reasonbly as well. We had them on our farm in Tractors, Utes & Etc. Handhelds, Mobile & Base units, really reliable gear. We never went for the units with a lot of "features" just the simple easy to use equipment. You pretty much just match your aerial to your unit when you buy it. I dont think we had a license, as far as I know licenses for them went out a while ago, I may be wrong though. Hope this is helpful.
no license needed and i would reccommend uniden.I have one and its easy to use
you can get the hand held tx6000 which limits range being portable , or the tx3200 (i think) which is mountable. Just remember that the aerial is extra I paid $90 for my aerial which was an unexpected cost.
aren't the tx series GME? They're a good brand too, just a tad dearer than Uniden. I've had my Uniden sundowner UH090 now for a couple of years, faultless to date.

had a gme installed 12 months ago and am glad i spent the extra as it has clearer reception than my mates uniden.and yes reef raider is right, allow $100 for aerial.
Reception on a unit usually has more to do with the aerial type, power & connection, as well as your location eg; obstacles and line of sight. Ive never noticed any of our sets to have poor reception (17 units.) farm was 72,000 acres of flat, undulating & steep country. Sometimes the squelch may need adjustment. I am not saying this is in all cases but certainly in my experience.
