Would be easily taken out by a bit of tire I would think - thats a lot of force rotating around there. Landrover must have good warranty policy if you could get something back from that.

GDay gents.
Just wondering if this has hapopended to anyone else or should I go and hunt up landrover to see how it could happen.
I was driving the landy at about 90km over the riverside expressway at 1:00am towing the boat.
Back left tyre goes BANG in a big way. Car jumps violently and to me if feels the wheel has actually come off and is caught up inder the guard.
After limping to just off the bridge I stop to find a big hole the in the tyre and the shock absorber broken clean through just above the bottom mount. Now I'm guessing a piece of the tyre has taken it out on the way around.
Juat after some thoughts on whether a shocky having done 90K should have been able to withstand a whack from some rubber or whether there is something I should chase up with Landrover here.

PS I've been telling Leanne I wanted new tyres, rims and a lift suspension kit for a while - best excuse I've ever had

Brett are your tyres rated correctly for the load you are carrying on the rear axel towing the boat. Remember it will push the back around a lot more and the tyres will take the blame in the end. (big boat the Bodgie)
Maybe shocky broke, it is only a Landrover after all.(couldn't resist sorry).
I would think if the shocky poked a hole in the side wall it would have torn a big chunk out.
More then likely you hit something on the road you did not see and the extra work the shocky had to do restraining a blow out was just to much.
I have never heard a better arguement to get the feeling.

Brett it is also good practice to increase the tyre pressure when towing a load.
This wil help prevent sidewall punctures.
In the past I spoke to a bloke who let the tyres down on his 4b when traveling down a gravel road to help the suspension???
Mind you he was changing a sidewall puncture , needless to say he was running STEEL BELTED RADIALS.

In hindsight I know what the problem was now.
Approaching the 100kmph the car would start to shake like shee need a wheel allignment or one of the wheel balances was out a fair bit. This started to happen the weekend before and in my normal busy life I never got around to check the tyres properly or take it in for a new ballance. I ride a motorbike to work and only pull out the girl on the weekend's.
This was the first trip I'd done since noticing the slight wobble. I'm now guessing the tyre had developed a bubble and was in the process of coming apart. The tyres had done 90k and pretty much only had 10-15k left in them I'd reckon.
I'd say the ride home for Scarborough was too much for the rubber and she let go. It must have been a fair bit of rubber to break the shocky - i was wondering whether the force of the drop onto the rim may also have been the cause of the shocky failure. Either way it's broken and needs to be fixed.

I did the same thing in my County a few years back. Felt a wobble approaching The Gateway Bridge and luckily it held to the bottom where it exploded and shredded itself. By the time I pulled over it had ripped off the flair, mudflap and peeled back the panel level with rear bumper. Theres a lot of force in a bit of rubber flying around at that speed.

I had the complte tread come off the rhs rear tire, boat one the back. as luck would have it the tyre didnt go flat but the tread rapped around the axle and totaled the rear guard, dent in the floor. The tyre was a perilli tyre and condition was about 25% worn (not a bloody retread either) and had been checked for temp about 15 minutes before

Further, Brett, you used tire and tyre. Are you thinking of taking out a duel citizenship ? or is that dual ?
90k out of a 4 x 4 tyre is very good going, anyway. and ya reckon ya had another 10-15k in them. not bad.
I am not too sure ( Kev ) about putting extra air in the tyres to compensate for towing, after all, you only should have a max of 200lb ( or equivalent in kg's ) on the tow ball anyway. That extra weight doesn't mean much in a 4 x 4 that has a 1 tonne payload capacity. Further, upon travelling, the tyres built up heat which in turn raises the tyre presure, anyway.

Your freindly tyre/tire specialist will be able to work out the correct cold inflation pressure in relation to the weight on the axel. And can even give instruction on the correct tyres/tires to fit in the given operating condition (towing heavy boat).Originally Posted by Lucky_Phill

and your helpful manufacturer (safety obligation to sell in Oz I believe) has placed a sticker on the door sill of the car or in the glove box with normal operating pressures & underload pressures (usually detailing loads too)

I actually run 55psi all day every day. They are/were BF Goodridge All Terrain T/A's.
I replaced the shocky on Saturday - very interesting. Seems it was broken well before the previous saturday. The split through the bolt end was rusted on both sides. The weight and how it sits in the cup where the rubber spacers go must have been holding it in.
The big bang must have just forced it out. Got a new single Pedders in there at the moment which means she's 3cm high on the back left
It's only an interim until I go and get the new shoes, rims and lift kit all the way around in August. Even Leanne agrees YEEE HAH

I' wouldn't mid the BF T/A's again but I've been told by 3 different people they've changed the compound in the last few years and don't wear as well as my current models.
