Hey Tom, I would make sure that your pump timing is correct then a good set of extractors and a free flowing exhuast will definitely help. You could also try some of the products from "Cost Effective Maintenance " [www.costeffective.com.au] can be very benificial to older engines
What size wheels do you have on it Thomas?
tom,
when you say it is a real slug what sort of speeds and revs are ya getting, I too have a hzj75 troopie and by no means are they a speed machine .... still get ya there but and home again... Im running 16in rims with 275/70 profile tyres and i get about 120kph at 3000rpms...
When i say slugish i mean very hard to hold 100km/h on the slightist of hills and find you always going down a gear and flogging it,i am gettting the same revs as bob (much the same tyres and rims).Must be getting to fusy as we also own a rodeo 3.0l turbo diesel and it is magic fully loaded and towing the tinny. After fishing on the weekend doing a bit of beach driving etc got 390km out of the front tank.pretty poor i reckon!
i would have to agree on the fact that if i reach a hill of any reasonable size i find my self reaching for the gear stick once or twice... i find if i am going up a big hill the old girl chugs in 4th then ya change to third and it revs its ring out i reckon i need a third and a half gear LOL.
I reckon i probably getting 600ks out of the front tank your right foot might weigh more than mine but....
If that was a 90ltr tank- something is not right.Originally Posted by thomas34

I tend to feel the injection timing is out or it needs a serious valve train adjustment. Or a long shot is bad exhaust restriction.
ditto reel hard,
390 km's means someone hasn't treated their tilly nicely. See a mechanic.
How old is this beast?
Start with desludging and injectors. Simple things like replacing air/fuel filters every now and then also make a big difference.
You may have had a bad batch of fuel - if it's been diluted with toluene or other nasties, they score injector tips bad..

nil carborundum illegitimi
exhaust was semi blocked all ok now thanks to all
Merry Xmas
My HZJ75 '95 model returns 8.1l per 100km, they might not be a V8 supercar performance-wise, but it'll go a hell of a lot more (and better) places.
