I own one of these and find it to be an excellant vehicle. I have however experianced a problem that seems to be endemic to the 1998 model. I know of four in my area that have all suffered from a lack of power & acceleration once they have about 50 -60,000 klms on the clock, mine included. Various experts were telling me that it was most likely the injector pump & would cost about $6,000.00 plus labour to replace - I would have given it the red steer before I paid that. The problem however is something much simpler and cheeper to fix as I found out myself from a little bit of trial and error. I removed the air flow sensor, this sits in the air intake line just in front of the air filter canister, I then gave the little metal rods & ports a clean with some Septone wax / grease remover (prepsol). The amount of gunk that came of was incredible even though it didn't look dirty. The difference was amazing to say the least. I then contacted another owner who was having the same trouble who did likewise and achieved the same result -I scored a carton of grog for that. However since then both of us has had to replace the sensor completly, his failed completly about six months later whilst driving on the beach, I got about 2 years and it just got lazy again. Nissan was charging over $600.00 for these 2 years ago but are now only $250.00 which is cheaper than non genuine at about $400.00 Since then a trucky I met who has one (when you own a Terrano 2 you tend to find others that have them too) has contacted me about the same problem. I hope this info can be help to someone else, Anyone else out there with a Terrano 2 I would like to hear.
thankyou for the post an tips- am interested in the terranos- great to find some one who has one-hey sound like a pretty good unit- have sent you a pm and e mail.
Would be interested to know if your air filter was an aftermarket one or genuine part ? Struck the same sort sort of problem on a 02 Patrol.
Thanks Peterr.
The air filter was an original. As yet I have not been able to source a servicable one such as the Finer Filter for the Terrano. I find it uncanny that you ask this question as it was a passing comment from a diesel pump & injector expert that set me on the trail to solving my problem The question was asked "do you have a Finer Filter fitted as these have been known to allow a bit of the oil to foul the senser"
The other interesting thing in regards to filters is that on replacing the filter that was in the vehicle when I purchased it (second hand) that filter was very dirty and the other owners that I mentioned in my original post also had very dirty air filters ???????????? Maybe this is something the owners of EFI vehicles may need to watch...... could be onto something here.
Apparently the paper material in non genuine filters are not up to scratch & the sensor gets bombarded with larger than normal dust particles , which dramatically reduces the life of the sensor.
This was a very costly exercise for the owner of the Patrol, as he serviced it himself.
ALWAYS use a genuine air filter in these cars.
Cheers Peterr.
A word of warning on cleaning the sensor. Yesterday a fellow that I had met (he owns a Terrano)contacted me regarding his vehicle lacking power and acceleration. I got him to bring it to my place and we swapped my new sensor into his with an immediate fix. We then proceded to give his a clean with some prepsol as mentioned in my original post. When he went to drive off however it would barely go, the sensor was completly stuffed. He lives over 30 kilometers away so we put my good one in his vehicle to get him home and a mate followed to pick me and my sensor up...... perhaps I was just lucky with cleaning the first couple, it may not be a good idea afterall.
