    advice on 4WD

guys im after some advice on 4wds

im looking at buying a 4wd to head to the beach on the weekends, as well as towing the 5.2m half cab.

    im currently looking at

    nissan pathfinders
    toyota prados
    mitsubishi pajero

how are these in the towing range of things, and how do they perform on the beach

price range maximum is $17-20000 (no higher)

    thanks Philip

    Re: advice on 4WD

    Hey Philip,

The old man has an NM Pajero and he tows a 2 tonne camper trailer all over the country with it, no worries. Don't know how it would go on the beach as he won't take it there. A very capable 4WD everywhere else though. Might be a bit heavy in the sand, but I imagine it would be OK.

I imagine the Prado would be OK for what you want, but wouldn't a Pathfinder be a bit light to tow a 5.2 half cab? How much does it weigh?

A diesel Prado would be the pick of the bunch

A Turbo Diesel Pajero will leave the prado for dead in the towing and sand driving dept but I think that would be out of your $ range.
Either Pajero petrol or Prado petrol would do what you want quite comfotably but the petrol engines will use more fuel when towing or working hard in the sand.
    Hope this helps

Thanks for that. ive read a few reports that the pathfinder can tow upto about 2 tonnes but yes it does seem to be quite light.

ill have to have a look around for a nice pajero or prado that fits the target range.

    Cheers Phil

mate of mine has an older v6 pathfinder and tows a 5.3m glass boat no problems - has a beach house about an hour drive on highway - does it easy.

they'll all do what you want fine.
