how to remove linings in rear of prado

    G'day,
I'm trying to install a milford cargo barrier in my 05 model prado and to do so I have to remove all of the carpet and upper and lower plastic linings in the rear of the vehicle. After recovering from the dissappointment that toyota hasn't already got cargo barrier mounts fitted to the vehicle i thought I would give it a go..............
Well after removing stacks of screws and trying to prise a few bits of plastic apart without breaking all the little plastic plugs I put it back together and thought I had better try and find out the correct order / way to do this.

Can anyone tell me how I should go about removing all the linings from the rear of my Prado so that I can drill holes and install the cargo barrier mounts.

If anyone knows of a cargo barrier that is better than the milford and somehow uses mounts already in the vehicle? please let me know.

    Cheers

    Ed,
You could try on of the 4x4 stores. I am sure you do not have to go to all the trouble that you are talking about.
You could also enquire at toyota as well.
    Don't now otherwise

    Guys,
OK I've done the job with some friendly advice so I thought I should post it here in case someone is searching for it in the future.
OK so no toyota manufactured mounts in the prado for a cargo barrier so you have to install the mounts and these come with the barrier.

You only have to remove the carpet, rear door seal (half way to vertical), rear side door seals (half way to vertical), tread plastic rear side doors, and rear cargo door, rear third row seat mounts (requires long socket or extended driver) and the lower side plastic lining in the rear. you will have to remove seatbelsts for the second and third row side seatbelts. Thats the easy part now some tips on how to do it.

First ignore the instructions that come with the barrier that say to remove the plastic lining and then mark out the locations of the mounting brackets in the side linings. Without removing anything measure 690mm from the rear edge of the plastic lining forward along the join between the upper and lower plastic linings (below the side windows in the rear cargo bay). from this point measure down 20mm from the join and mark this, drill a pilot hole here through the plastic lining and through the inner skin of the vehicle this is the exact location for the mounting brackets and negates the complex instructions that come with the cargo barrier to first install the mount and then put all the plastic on again to align it and then remove it and drill it and then install it again - very difficult.

The plastic step liner in the rear cargo bay it is held down by several plastic plugs but at the ends is also held into the side trim. When removing you have to push down on the side trim and pull up on the centre step trim "right at the end". This will come apart but is very hard and isn't aided much by pinching the little clip together underneath so don't worry about this.

When removing the side trims they are held in by plastic plugs, are screwed to the floor and fixed to the uppper side trim. best thing is remove the two floor screws, make sure you have the plastic plugs towards the front (in the rear side door step area removed) and then when pulling the side trim out form the bottom hit the upper trim gently with your flat hand or fist and the two panels will separate.

It makes a bit of a mess with all the drilling and what not but use a good anti rust coating after drilling make sure you go to significant bother to remove all of the swathe and definitely use a ridgid drill stop to prevent damaging brake lines and outer panels.

I still can't believe that Toyota doesn't have mounts made as part of the manufacture of this vehicle that you can simply pop the plastic cover plug out of and screw the cargo barrier in. The minute they did this everyone making cargo barriers would be forced to make the necessary changes so their barriers for that model would comply.

Thanks for the tips from the Ausfish guys and others around the place, I probably couldn't have done it without their help, certainly not as neatly and quickly and I have saved a neat 200 for doing the installation myself (175 if I was prepared to drop it in and leave it there).

Good luck if you are searching for this thread and find it - make sure you really like your car and need the savings otherwise just pay the 200 for someone to butcher it for you - all the damage is out of site and out of mind once they cover it all up with plastic anyhow.
