The Cape

Mate of mine just returned home from a Cape trip. That is the third time in as many years. This time they took the Telegraph track.

His Rodeo suffered minor damage:-

new shockies ..............dead
all electrics..................dead
Sills ..........................damaged
Mud flaps....................gooone !
Interior......................wet,wet,wet
many other problems......

But he had a great time................ I will get the guff on what exactly happened soon.

Even though the route to the cape is well travelled, don't be lead into a false sense of security that it is an easy trip.

A friend of mine went up to the cape in his 60 series troopy and suffered some damage as well. The worst of it was the body panels on the rear popped away where it was factory welded together. He said that you could only do 5 kl/h and suffered this damage. He was a cautious driver to go with it.
I also know of others who have suffered major damage up there but one story is enough.

Ive been to the cape twice.both times on telegraph line. Total damage both trips 2 Punctures..

did the trip myself some years back and its a trip
that everybody who owns a 4wd should do.

Funny thing, on the way up, they found a 2004/05 Patrol stuck in the middle of a fairly swollen river. No one around !!!!!!!!

Upon return, the wheels, bullbar and some under-the-bonnet parts had been removed. Must have used SCUBA to get the wheels I reckon !

I should mention that had put on a set of Cooper ATR's for the trip, and although they are worse for wear, due to sharp rocks etc, not one puncture etc. Think he done a windscreen as well. ????

Drove back from Weipa a week and a half ago (flew up to drive out with my brother - didn't even get a chance to wet a line - d'oh) - road out was the absolute best i've ever ever seen it - and i travel up there a few times a year. (I flew out of cairns at midday and was back in town before midnight)

I imagine the damage mentioned all happened north of Moreton station, as it would be tame as south of there the water crossings on the telegraph track would have to be pretty deep at the moment and if you didn't scout them properly, there's plenty of sniper rocks and logs to cause damage lol.

took some photos of the patrol that got smashed at the archer - the amazing thing is it went off the crossing BEFORE monica went across the cape - given that the water was 12-14 METRES over the crossing after the cyclone, its amazing that the car is still there just beside the causeway - probably testament as to how stuck it is, particularly after someone nicely removed its wheels to ensure it couldnt't go anywhere (i hear the owner had no insurance )

ps - never had any damage to my patrol (a couple of flats on crap tyres and that's it.)

Took my Hilux up last June ........Unbreakable. Cost = 1 tyre & 1 Uhf aerial.

Bring on the Gibb River Road in 5 weeks time!

i took my nissan patrol up there last year i went the telegraph track and the maytown track i made it with one puncture i and my mates were a bit disappointed it wasn't more remote every tom dick and harry was on the telegraph track not many on the maytown track. if you love adventure take the maytown track 60km in 8 hours slow going. no fishing out there but.

fish the seisa jetty GBC its great fun but use the fresh bait fish under the jetty you'll have more success this way take some jigs with you and if your serious take something stronger than 20lb line. i only took 20lb line and just kept getting broken off by the big stuff heading for PNG. livies are the go not a touch on lures but livies bang bang bang. one bloke caught a big barra but couldn't land it it was just sitting there in the water before he had to cut it loose. must have been about 80cm to 1m long good mackeral from the jetty as well mate

GBC, and others, just before the wenlock river, say 1.5-2ks on the southern side of river,you will see a dirt track on your right, follow that down say about another 2k, you will have to drive down a steep bank, once down there turn right, you will have a ball catching barra on small poppers and S/T, hope ya get the chance to stop there

Anyone thinking of doing the The big trip to the Cape had better get it done it the next couple of years as the Gas pipline is coming through from PNG and once this has happened the road will become an all weather road and the adventure of coming up here will be all over. It just won't be the same driving up here in a Commodore, or maybe with the rising fuel cost Toyata Echo.
