HILUX clutch slipping
I think the pressure plate is more likely the problem, but will obviously change both.
2000 diesel model , done 160,000 K , 99 % of it on sealed roads, I dont think it should be worn out yet, but I am a bit of a clutch jockey.
I have also just noticed it has developed a small oil leak probably around the rear crankshaft seal, could some oil be getting thrown up on the clutch causing it to slip?
Still goes OK , but I don't want it to give out half way up the boat ramp.
So the question is how hard is it to do on a 4wd hilux, anything to watch out for, and where is the best place to buy a new (recon) one?

I really wish I could help but two things. Firstly I know nothing about 4wd clutches and secondly I have a Pajero and 350,000klms later the original clutch is still going strong. Best thing would be to pop it in to a place like Girlock and get the professionals to give a free assessment and go from there.

first thing to check is that the thrust bearing isnt pushed hard onto the fingers of the clutch plate. Have this adjustment checked ASAP as it might let you get another 100 000k out of the clutch. The bigest problem with doing this sort of job at home is the weight of the gearbox and transfer case working in very minimal room. Really a job for the hoist and the approved lift/holding jacks for the gearbox.

I see you are a self confessed clutch jockey.One way to stop the need to slip the clutch is to use low range when pullin the boat up a ramp or backin it into the shed.That way you can fullu release the clutch and save unnecessary wear,I dont bother puttin the hubs in sothetre is no need to get out to do that.
I had a dodgy clutch in a fourrunner for 150000 ks and just used the above method.also when manovouring my caravan.Finally replaced it after 250000.The job can be done if you have someone to help and you have a reasonable knlwledge,and a good toolset.
I wouldnt attempt it if you dont have a fairly good idea what to do.
Finally get a complete kit ---plate and pressure plate and NEW THROWOUT bearing. i think mine cost around $250.

if you have a rear main oil leak, it would explain your problem, very common thing, need to replace clutch AND repair leak which is quite a labour intensive job, but not all that difficult.

Thanks Jimbamb and Noelm, I realise it will be a fairly time consuming job after getting under there and having a look around. I got a lot of tools and have done a couple of clutches before , one in front wheel drive Mitsubishi and one old holden (too easy).
Everything looks a lot heaver under the Hilux and there is more bits (transfer case).
Noelm , it might be mostly from the oil, both seemed to happen about the same time, and it seems to grip better after a while , I am guessing after the oil burns off a bit.
So oil soaking in to the clutch plate ruins it ?, you cant fix the oil leak and wash the plate with kero or petrol and put it back, assuming it has plenty of wear left.

If it's any help to you, I have done the clutch in my 4x4 hilux and yes.. it is a mongrel job because of the height, weight and sheer size of the gearbox and transfer case. I ended up replacing the pressure plate, clutch and throwout bearing for about $220. Get a 4x4 place to do it.. It will save your back and knuckles and the swear jar . I'd say 4-5hrs for a mechanic to do the job

Easiest way to do a hilux clutch is pull the engine out. Seems drastic but from experience a lot easier than pulling gearbox out.

Hainsey, i'll second that. Its actually time saving to do it that way, I ended up pulling the engine and box out the second time....

You guys are starting to scare me.
Maybe, its a diesel and not EFI so not that many connections, plus plenty of room once you loose the bonnet.
You would undo it around the bellhousing and leave the gearbox in there wouldn't you.?

Only reason i didnt remove engine was the air cond..Would have to disconnect it and lose the gas.. Another expence to regas and test etc..
Definately easier except fot that.

G'day
THe main reason I took the engine and box out as one was to save time and frustration when it comes time to mate it back up later. Although, by keepiing the box EXACTLY where it's meant to go, it shouldn't be too hard.

Seahunt, Yes undo the gearbox bolts from the bellhousing. If it does have air con you can usually undo the compressor from the mount and leave it sit in the engine bay. About the only extra expense is putting some coolant back in the radiator when finished. I would definately do it this way if there was a leak at the back of the motor, easy fix while out.

Dave dont u have to remove the radiator and a/c condenser? maybe it can be tucked to one side also..

You wont have to but probably best to remove it. Just have to disconnect the radiator hoses top and bottom. I pull the radiator out to save bumping and possibly damaging it, but the A/C condensor definately stays in place.
