Fish oil... horible smelling stuff. I used to use TAC2 which is like a sticky grease on my cruiser, but how they do it at the factory's is heat them up hot and then cool them in warm oil so it penatrates into the steel. Then black killrust or some other type of rust preventative. But i would just give it a good pressure wash and some paint. Just check for rust around the milliatary roll which is the eye part at the end of the first leave thats where they break mostly.
I have heard that molassis is good for rusty springs haven't tried it myself. But a mate recons he soaked his boat springs in it and they came up good he reckons. Myself I have no idea if it is a good method. I know you can't paint them as this weakens the tension. Why not get them reset and wire brushed at the same time
