I have a 92 turbo diesel l/cruiser. When you release the clutch there is a clunk from under the car. We had a look on the weekend and the uni joints seem to be OK. Thinking maybe the diffs. Has anyone experienced this problem or can a good mechanic be recommended. I live northside of brisbane. It also does it when I'm in 5th gear and power off.

Throwouts clunk in the gearbox when stuffed -
Same sound also comes from in/output shafts in the transfer when damaged.
Could just be a sticky clutch with some backlash too?
Needs to be diagnosed by more than chatroom chat though....

Now back to my problem, after speaking to the mechanic his words were
"It's a feature not a fault" in other words I was to picky.
He did suggest to remove the front tailshaft and to install free-wheeling hubs this should quiten things down a bit under the body. I only use the 4 wheel drive feature a few times a year. Has anyone else done this.
While he was looking we notice a slight leak in the fuel pump a repair cost of about $1700 and this will include the update parts to stop what he refered to as the Rock and Roll feature, common in the 80 series turbos.
What would a set of free wheeling hubs cost, where can I buy them and can the average person install them.

Complete F-wheeling conversion kit around $1200 - can get them various places - try 4wd systems S.A. only because they come to mind first. They deliver anywhere....
Just to install a set of hubs is $250 odd for the parts, however your front driveline will continue to spin and probably still knock.
Can't say how hard it is to do - because I've never done it. Fron end ie installing hubs is a 20 minute job, but then the centre diff actuator switch has to be played etc to complete the job.

We Series 3 owners call that "clunk", system feedback - it lets you know the vehicle is in operating mode.
I have the topshelf model with SFT (system feedback technology) on all controls from steering to braking, clutch to wipers.I worry when it doesn't clunk.

Your pretty confident in your vehicle mate!! That good as GBC and i and a few other mates are going upto one of our favorite locations for a bit of camping and trucking, The terrain gets a little ExTrEmE at times and it would be really great to have a Triton along to show us Toyota and Nissan owners a thing or two about 4x4ing and you could drive the tracks first so we would have a vehicle ready at the other end incase one of our lesser vehicles gets stuck or rolls.
Yep it's about time for a Ausfish 4x4 m/g i'm sure we all would be impressed by the mighty TRITON

This is the track to the camp , it can be a little tricky at times , nothing a winch doesn't solve but i'm sure your Triton will Pi$$ it in mate!!!!

Ps. I have never seen a Triton in an Offroad comp (eg. tough tracks , winch challenge) plenty of Nissans , toyotas, suki's, range and land rovers, maybe there banned because it would be unfair to everyone else
