Thread: 80 series clunking

    Re: 80 series clunking

Gotta admit I did see a bloke from Gladstone/Rocky? blitz the flat track events at LCMP one year in a ten y.o. very stock looking triton. The guy could drive - or he had nothing left to live for.....
Not sure how stock the donk was though, but the main factor was that he had very well sorted ifs and drove all over the big boys in the comp utes.

Such a shame, it's probably rusted by now.

    Similar to what Finding-Time stated,

How come I never see any Tritons in the 4x4 comps I enter, let alone attending them...Softroaders #

Plenty of Jeeps, Nissans, Zuks, Landy's, Tojo's, no Tritons?

He didn't actually make it up, shat the drive train. But our TJ Wrangler made it on our 2nd attempt. A Triton would walk up it off course. The bloke taking a pic in the bottom right corner gives you an indication to the steepness/grade.

This is us on a different track, where are those Tritons?

    Mate,
The problem is the backlash in the gearbox, transfer case.
There is a kit you can buy and put in it but you need to know what you are doing.
I have posted on here a few times about my mate at samford who is a mechanic, he had one that did the same thing and after the kit went in no more clunking.
Give him a ring and talk to him about it and he will tell you whats involved to fix it. It will only get worse.

Wayne, you can get a free wheeling hub kit for around $550. Not a difficult job to install yourself. A few mods to the box, but we've done it in half a day without any problems.
How many K's on your Yota. After driving converted 80's, I wouldn't do the conversion myself, can't see the reason in it. We've got around a dozen of 80's that go driving with us, (mind you, not many of us do comps with them) and there are a few of them that have done the mod and now wish they hadn't.
4WD Systems have them on special at the moment for $549.00, you can contact them on (08) 8369 0033, or on the net at www.4wdsystems.com.au.

    Hope this helps you,
    Cheers
