MaxTrax - Has anyone used them???

Guys, was given a maxtrax dvd to watch the other day and the demos they gave were very impressive. They made the recovery of a vehicle look soo easy. Have any of you guys used them and if so were the as good as the dvd made them out to be. I am by no means a serious 4wder but as we tow boats on the beach and the retrieval can occasionally end in being stuck on the waters edge I figured these may be cheap insurance against this (if they work of course). I have seen them on their website for $295 a pair. Is this the going price and would one set generally be sufficient?

havent ever needed to carry such a thing on the beaches but they could be handy for inexperienced drivers or for heavily loaded up vechicles doing a big trip. another allternative is to carry a couple of thin short lengths of mesh rienforceing on the roof rack, do tthe same job, light wieght and cost next to nothing.
