Hi Dave, did it lose power just after you put your new fuel filter on? did you prime the diesel filter pump?
does it sound rough at idle
also have you checked your air cleaner
if its gunked up you will notice loss of power

As the title states, i've had a significant loss in power. I run a 4x4 dual cab hilux. Vintage is '82 with a 2.2L diesel.
The last few weeks I have been getting critically low on fuel before getting to the servo, and sucking through airpockets periodically up hills and the like.
I have just changed the fuel filter and there was heaps and heaps of gunk in the last one.
What i'm thinking is, some gunk has gotten past then filter somehow and is now blocking one of the injectors, restricting the flow of diesel to the cylinders.
Any other suggestions?

Dave does that model have the rotary type injector pump ????
If so & you say you have been running it low on fuel & sucking air you may have damaged the the internal vane pump which creates the injection pressure, the diesel lubes the vane pump & they don't live very long when run out of fuel .......... #

Mal.... i'm not sure about the style of fuel pump. Doesn't sound promising if that's the case
Daz. Power was lost before the new fuel filter - hence why I changed it.
At idle she sounds normal, No I haven't had a look at the air cleaner as yet and I didn't prime the pump.....

Mal, Just got off the phone to the diesel mechanics. Yes you are right in saying the pump is a rotary type. It's a nip on enzo or something? Or thats what it sounded like
He said 80% of the fuel that goes to the pump is used as a coolant and lubricant, so no chance of damage.
Looks like I will have to search from the pump back to the pickup.

Water filter? I remember my old 60 series had a water filter half way back towards the tank. never got full but I did drain it a couple of times over the 3 years i had it. don't know if water in the system would kill it or just make it Pi#$ Fart and loose power???
other option is do you use diesel injector additive at all?? this is ment to clean the injectors and give you better more economical power.. I use to use 20mls or something every 2nd tank in my old truck, they tell you on the bottle how much you should use.

Dave, its probably a Nippon Denso pump and as Mal said they are very intolerant of being run dry due to heat and lack of lube. If its sucked a heap of gunk it would be worth checking the pick up in the tank because all the rubbish thats floating on the bottom of the tank would have been sucked into the pickup when it was so low on fuel, most fuel pick ups will have a strainer of sorts and this could be restricting fuel flow hence the running ok at idle but not able to supply enough fuel as the revs climb. Hope it all works out ok.

Yes, I metioned I ran it dry and he didn't sound concerned at all. I'll have a look for some blockages. There's no water in the resevoir, so we can rule water out.

can't remember if there is a strainer in the tank,the tank is'nt too hard to pull out,if the lift pump is'nt working properly you could try an electric pump-cheaper than getting the injector pump fixed.
Another thing that sometimes gets over looked is if a baffle comes loose in the muffler and partly blocks the exhaust.
How can you drive it? they had no power to start with Had mine for 10 yrs,

well... i'm at a loss. Today I took the sediment and water trap off of the hilux.... (yes it's a nippondenso). I took her apart completely and flushed and cleaned it part by part. There are 2 little diaphrams or valves that sit on the fuel inlet side, they were clogged with crap. The resevoir was clogged with crap aswell. As was the rest of the smaller parts. I flushed the fuel lines from the intake back to the tank and there was dicoluration in the fuel there... just pointing to sediment and stuff up this end of the line. I continued to back flush both the main line and return line back into the tank with compressed air to rid any possible blockage inside the tank. I ran fresh fuel through the fuel pump with no worries at all. All went back togeather better than it came out and started well and ran and idles well. I still have the same power... or lack of. I'll put it down to a dud batch of fuel and I only have 20L to use 'till I can put a fresh batch in and try that theory out.

could it be as simple as an air lock in one of the injectors?? air can get trapped in the lines and stay there until its removed.
have you cracked all of them to bleed out air?
to have a lacking of power in a 2.2 hilux it must be sad when you see a hill
try driving the new 3lt turbo hilux and get back into the old faithfull 2.2

Thanks murf... haven't even considered bleeding the lines to injectors. I'll do it in the mornin. Mate, to be honest.... in ye ol faithful 2.2 any hill is a mountain
At the moment I only get 80km/hr in 5th foot flat to the floor. I should be seeing 100km.

Just checked the engine oil... it's fine. Just checked the air intake and blew out the pod filter with compredssed air.. nothing outa the ordinary. Also cracked each fuel line to each injector with the engine running.... no air to bleed out, just fuel.
I have just put a double dose in the tank of diesel conditioner. It's DT5, from pro-ma,
Mal, Haven't noticed anything different with the exhaust... haven't checked it when revved up either though, that will be the next check.
I can feel my next truck getting closer..........
