    Bridgestone D964 v Cooper ATR v Maxxis MA761

One of these will be the replacement tyres on my 120 prado.

Anyone already using any of these with good or bad points?

    Cheers, rhet

    Hi Rhet
I have had 3 sets of 10R15 LT ATs on my old Hilux 87 diesel and got over 110000kms out of each set of them.
Put the STs 145/75 16s on the new Hilux 05 diesel and didnt like them at all. I found them terible dragging boat around Fraser Is, they just chewed in and wouldnt float even at 14psi and they through rocks every where as i live down a dirt road then straight onto the Pacific HWY. so I replaced them with the ATRs 145/75 LT 16s but the LT version are hard running with the thick sidewalls. I guess i will get better kms out of them though.
I will be towing the boat then the van out to our local spot Pebbly Beach to try out the new ATRs for the first time on the sand in a couple of weeks.
if you do get Coopers check out the waranty kms this gives an indication of the wear ie a 265/75R15 only claims 50000km but the LT145/75R16 claims 800000km. check $perkm
    Cheers Murf

Well I went to a Cooper dealership to get Cooper tyres on my car because I know they are a very good tyre and have been recommended to me highly from a few sources including my brother who uses them but when I got to the dealer he threw a spanner in the works and said that he has been getting a fantastic run on the Kumho brand. I saved nearly $100 per tyre by trying them and I got 130,000 klms out of them. I just replaced them a few weeks ago and this time decided to go for the same brand but in the A/T. Very happy with them although they didn't stop me from 80klms to dead stop( No tyre would have) well enough when a pair of silly women pulled a stupid stunt in front of me. Short screech and BANG! # Minimal damage to the Pajero but the car I hit was a write off. Sorry to throw another brand into the choice but they are at least worth having a look at. I highly recommend them for value for money. Cost me $195 each including fitting and balancing. Incidently one of the old Kumho tyres was still good enough to use as a spare as well.

I run and recommend the Maxxis 761's good on road 4x4 tyre, a bit more road orientated than most A/T's but they wear very well. I used MT Claws for the bush.
Coopers do offer a fair warranty but it has its faults, i.e. their warranty is void unless you get a balance, alignment and rotatation every 10k. They will not warranty all areas (due to road condition etc.)
The Maxxis 761's are a 17/32 tread depth (deeper) compared to the usual 15/32 tread depth on most other brands. If you were in the states the Maxxis would usually come with a 50k MILE (8Ok km) warranty, but we're not so we don't. But it obviously shows they too have faith in their tyre wear capabilities. Plus they are very good in the wet and cheaper.

Don't know jack about the Bridgestone other than they are usually quite $$$. Good luck.

I have a set of 964s on my patrol ute. Great tread, good noise level. I have only travelled about 10000ks so far and can't see any wear on them.

    So far so good!

Ive been running the 964's on my 03 prado for the last 15000k and they are going great, I used to live in Alice Springs and done plenty of sand driving in the desert and plenty of dirt tracks. They are a good tyre and I have no problem recomending them. Thats not to say the others arent as good but I know the 964 Duelers from my own expierence. Its getting easyer to get 17'' tyres now for the Prado, before we had a choice of about 2-3 brands, just watch the speed rating on them though as I was told I had to keep the same speed rating on the tyres or it affects your insurence....

    Good luck

Coopers - i've been very impressed with mine - not a single puncture in 3years (thought i had one the other week but i'd actually damaged the valve letting the landy loose in the bush. In speaking to other coopers owners the results are similar - the tread patterns do not seem to funnel things into the tyre - or is it coincidence The wear very well and are quiet on the road.

have seen a lot of bridgies throw a steel belt in road tyres
