    NK Pajero Problem

    Hello,
I have a '96 3.5L Pajero (NK) that has a problem. It starts but then the engine stops if left to idle. If you increase the revs it will stay running. Any ideas before I take it in to my mechanic?

    Cheers,

    Injector cleaner might help.
Or better still put pulp in it, that has some pretty good cleaners in it.

So is this on cold start.
And warm start, or just cold start.

A/C on or off might be a solenoid.

Air filter would have to be clogged but could do it.

    Hi Cosmo....

sounds like the idle speed motor has died.

Fairly common hicup with these at around the 10 yr mark.

    Simple job to fix, tho.

Thanks for the info everybody. Now I've got somewhere to start.

    Hey Harry,

Where is the idle speed motor you mentioned?

    Cheers.

    Hi Cosmo.

Its under the plenum chamber, on the throttle body.

A simple diagnosis is to start the engine, and steady
the revs with your foot at about 900-1000 rpm,
then swith the a/c on, and observe the tacho.

It will pick up 2-300 odd revs, if it is working.

If not, the ISM is kaput.

The ISM can work intermittantly, or just suddenly
stop working. Once they start to play up, its a matter of time
how long they will last until it stops alltogether.

Available from the Mitsi dealer new, there are "reco"
units around, but they are only slightly cheaper than
new ones, and not worth the potential hassles.

Don't be tempted to stuff around with the idle speed screw.

    Harry.

Had the Pajero fixed today at the local dealer, it was the idle speed motor after all. I got stung $275 for the part plus $100 for labour. (I didn't have the time to fix it myself).

    Thanks for your help!!

    Hi Cosmo....

Price for the part sounds about right, but
a $100 for labour? Bloody hell.....

    2 screws, 1 connector, 10 minutes...

There is no need to reset any other adjustments, as the ecu
    resets the ISM...

    Oh well..........

I hear Lubemobile charges nearly $130/hr these days...

I hear you Harry0, $100 doesn't get you much these days especially in Central Queensland.

    Cheers.
