getting to weipa
Gidday, a mate and I are looking to do a trip to the far north this year or next and we were concidering Weipa as a destination.
Has anyone here been there before?
What are the roads like?
I have heard several confliction arguemens as to the condition of the roads (sealed/unsealed)
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Cheers

Re: getting to weipa
i went up in july 2005 roads are corrogated dirt once you leave the tar at lakelands bit of tar at coen but other than that dirt watch out for the dips do not take chances slow down for all of them and be careful on the bends heaps of head on smashes you never hear about we saw a lot of damage to vehicles caused by the dips weipa camping grounds are great and if they ever finish the lodge it will be better what sort of vehicle do you have

Re: getting to weipa
a mate just came back and said it was the worst 700 klms of road he had seen. that bad that he shiped his boat and trailer back to cairns.so dont think of taking a boat or trailer across it unless you want major problems. nothing like abroken trailer to set the holiday going. cheers..........

The road condition changes year to year.
Check a few of the 4Wd chat areas - through GOOGLE to get the latest information. It all depends on the Wet and Dry for the roadcrews
I towed a 15 foot boat and trailer up and back one year.
Great place to fish. You can hire boats at Weipa, I think it is "Pugwash"

Mate honestly apart from the annoying stutter bumps, it's a piece of cake, 2wd vehicles do it every year. The only consideration is the wet, if it gets wet it gets difficult, lots of dirt left. A mate went up just a week ago for work - easy trip as he was in no rush.
It's the options you have once at about Weipa height and above that can start becoming difficult, still yet to go further myself, next dry season with a bit of luck. Need to do it soon because the area is well on it's way to being dumbed down, lot's of 'improvements' happening.

I drove up there in Sept '05 in a '98 Pathfinder without any worries. I'm going again this Sept but I'll be flying.
A mate of mine lives there so I have no need for a vehicle once I get there. It's easier to fly from Cairns for me than it is to drive from townsville.

Yep Used To Travel Up To Weipa Every Two Years Non Stop Great Place To Fish ,best Place Used To Be Going Out To Mapoon And Driving Along The Beach To A Place We Called Janie Creek, Fishing Was Spectacular But I Have Heard That It Has Been Opened Up Heaps Now, When We Were First Going There , No Toilets Nothing Last Time I Went Was Two Dunnies Set Up , Plus You Have To Pay At Mapoon To Camp At Janie Now, And Last I Heard When We Went There Was Nobody But Sometimes The Odd Local From Weipa Fishing, Now I Heard That There Were Thirty People All In One Little Spot Camping. Still A Great Place To Fish.
The Road To Weipa Varied, first Time I Went Road Was Heaps Of Corrugated Ruts , Shook The Shit Out Of All Of Us But Was Great The Dips Are Amazing And I Love How People Have Written On The Sign Dip
As In Used A Black Texta And Put Slipper Dip, Dip Shit, You Name It There Is A Saying For Them All, But Last Time I Went They Had Graded The Road So It Was A Breeze, Hey Was A Trip Without The Fun Of It All.
Gord Worse Road I Went On Was The Thick Red Bulldust Out In The Gulf
Area, Now Thats A Challenge.
Anyways Hope You Make It , Didnt Fish In Weipa Itself Always Headed Out To Mapoon, But Had Some Great Nights In Weipa Rsl Club What A Hoot.
Have A Great Time And A Great And Safe Trip
