Well, the monkey is finally off the back!
After a shocker on Australia day (12hrs for absolutely nothing) we managed to redeem ourselves.
We noticed some bait between the leads and hutchies, so in went the skirts...
double hook up of 6kg Cobia.
after that....nothing else from the bait school.
We headed for hutchies and had to weave in and out of boats to get to the reef.... nothing there...no bait either
we looked east - nothing - looked northeat and southeast...nothing
then we looked south west in the shallower water near where the trawlers were parked... plenty of bait, boated another Cobia and a small Stripey.
We didnt see any marlin, dollies, wahoo or yellowfin.
Did anyone else manage much from around hutchies?
We are only new to the area and are trying hard, but still not sure if we are doing the right thing...
The best part of the day was my 8 yr old son Kieran, catching his first gamefish ever, a 6kg Cobia on 6kg line.
A friend made him a 6kg stick with a short butt and we coupled it with a shimano 2000 charter special with the levelwind. worked perfectly for him.
After a few Steve Starling videos and a few practice sessions at home with the dog, Kieran was "as keen as" to catch a fish.
He worked the rod like a champion for 15 minutes and came up with the goods Even in the excitement of seeing his fish at the side of the boat, he even remembered to point the rod down and back off the drag when the Cobia ran.
He couldnt lift it for the photo, but he is already talking about catching something bigger... hi snext target is a Marlin!
