Cairns Tuna, Sharks and one lucky Wrasse

Went out to Arlington today with Dan (Bad Bubby) to see what was cooking. Wasn't sure about the weather as it's been pretty shite lately, but ended up being great with a clear sky and very little wind.

Tried in vain to catch some reefies, then got distracted by tuna blowing up everywhere. Went on to have the most action packed session casting lures at tuna that I can remember.

They were mostly Mack Tuna, though there were a few schools of Stripey's as well. For about three hours we were hooked up cast after cast. Double hookups were standard, and at one stage I got three fish from three consecutive casts.

Dan started going through his lure box to see what the tuna wouldn't take. Poppers? no problem

We ended up out at Finn Reef, where we tried for reefies again. What felt like a great fish ended up being nothing but a big white tip reef shark. And another, and another.

Dan continued to play around with his lures, until a big GT took one home.

We then moved back towards Arlington and again had a go for the reefies. Again shark after shark.

Eventually, I hooked a solid fish and to my surprise this one wasn't a shark. Never caught a Maori Wrasse before so I was pretty pleased. Old Wrasse would have been pretty pleased to be protected too. If it had of been a few years earlier he would have found himself in a spicy breader mix.

Eventually we headed back in, caught a few more tuna, and then quit for the day.

All up we caught between thirty and forty tuna. Plenty were released, and plenty were kept as they're great bait.

    Beats mowing the grass!

    cheers,

It was a pretty fun session Steve, mack tunas galore. Conditions were great too as I'm not sure how much I would have enjoyed getting soaked and blasted by splintering water for the umpteenth consecutive time. Just good being out there and seeing pelagics carving it up. It was remarkable how aggressive the mack tuna were at times. The maori wrasse wasn't a bad catch too by the way!
