Fantastic fish - but a shame - Prime Breeding Stock - should have gone back to King Neptune! IMHO

Hard to condemn the guy, you don't land a fish like that on 10lb line every day, perhaps it was DOA. Pesonally I prefer to eat the smaller (squire) sizes, but those big buggers can really go hard!

I agree with from the point of view that it should have gone back.
But when you have never caught a snapper like that before and it is your PB by a long shot I would keep it. I actually brought it up with my mates stating that it wont eat well and was probably best left to fight another day, They agreed but have the same veiw point as I. That would be one hell of a fish to try and tell your mates that you caught without the proof as they say.
One is enough now though cause it will be a very long time before the get another like that, and if they do get another like that and I dont get an invite it will be their LAST.......... Grrrrhhhhhhhh

I had a thread going on this - its on the second page of general chat called Snapper Spawning - Something to consider! I started the thread because it continues to amaze me how many good snapper keep coming from the Hards, Banks, Cal Wide etc. The run of snapper which usually based around winter fishing has continued now for nearly 9 months - Such a good thing cant keep going on forever.............if you know what i mean. Each mature Female Snapper potentially lays 5 Million eggs - that why its important in the size department. My thoughts are that we should have an upper size limit on snapper like we do for big flathead because weve seen the positive effect that has had on the fishery.
Females spawn repeatedly over a 3 – 4 month spawning season. In a spawning season, a 3 year old
female may produce 250,000 eggs, a 1.5kg female may produce 300,00 to 400,000 eggs and a 10
year old female may produce 5 million eggs.
Fish can mature after 2 years. Mature broodstock are usually held in spawning tanks or floating net
cages, at a sex ratio of 1:1 and a density between 0.5 and 1.5kg/m3. Females with oocytes (eggs
before the completion of maturation) greater than 0.9mm in diameter can be readily induced to ovulate
using hormone induction. Induced spawning techniques using human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG)
are well developed, however, natural spawning produces better quality eggs.

Top snapper mate! Most anglers go a lifetime without catching a fish of that class and to do it on 10lb gear makes it all the sweeter.

I would have nearly fainted if I saw that thing surface next to the boat to gaff. Well done guys. Must be a super secret spot to pull consistant big ones like that.
I very much doubt that they would be pulling fish of that calibre consistently from any secret spot inside the bay!
Lots of hours, lots of trips but it only takes one fish like that to make the effort worthwhile!

Firstly BM, mate as I said I had brought it up myself. each to their own in my opion but it would be great if we all looked to a long and healthy future of fishing.
And personally I didn't think your comments were worth attacking as they were put forward in a good manner. My thoughts and not wanting to be gunned down on this would be to have a closed season whilst spawning/ breeding in on. Yeah fair call to say that the stocks for the for the first few years would be tough but can you imagine the size and quantity of fish in the longer term.
As for the comments of a Spot X or a secret spot........I happyly sit here with a very large grin on my face cause I have found out where it was caught and let me tell anyone that cares to listen,,,,, This spot aint no secret........

Thought I would update this report for the benifit of us all.
Comments were made regarding that maybe this fish should have been released. Which alot of me tends to agree with. But I think hold my hand on my heart that most (Not all) of us would find it hard to put a fish back of this size as we all understand that it truely is a fish of a life time.
The guy in the secound pic is the man that caught this monster and the funny thing is how the feelings of regret and disappointment set in after
the reality of the catch set in. Upon speaking to these guys straight after the catch they stated that they would not keep a fishof this size again.
Learning that this particular fish may be as old as 50yrs (so I am told)
its a funny thing that this guy is regretful about is Keep.
Any way just thought I would let you guys out there is Ausfish land have an up date. Here are the pics of the jaws.
