    An Afternoon at Bustard

The three weeks I spent up at Agnes was beginning to look like a no fish holiday, which in my world is a total disaster.

The wind had hardly stopped, which is fairly normal for that time of the year, but I've never had a holiday up there yet, without being able to launch my seafarer.

So with only a few days before we were due to start packing, the wind died just enough to allow me to launch the boat for a quickie outside.

On leaving the inlet the first thing I noticed were birds diving on schools of something. The somethings turned out to be spotties, everywhere. Out came the slugs and after a few casts I hooked up onto the first spotted mackeral of the afternoon.

Casting slugs at mackeral, is up there with the best for me, I absolutely love it. The only problem was the school I was casting to, contained fairly small fish as you can see in the photos. Still a lot of fun all the same.

It was then off to Bustard to tow some baits around for spaniard or two.

The place was alive with small mackeral, I had 8 slimies ruined before I got tired of donating, so I thought I might tow some lures instead, which is something I hardly do these days, at least, when I'm fishing for mackeral.

With in ten minutes, the bomber lure I had out the back got nailed. I wound in my very first Broard Barred Mackeral, it was disapointing with its lack of fight, particularly since it would have given 5kg a nudge.

Out went Mr Bomber again, and sure enough off it went. This time it was obviously not another broard barred mack, but a nice trevelly with plenty of go.

After about another 20 minutes, with things looking a bit quiet, I decided to put the baits out again in the hope of picking up a spanish before heading back. It only took one lap around the rock, they didn't let me down, and I soon had one of my favourites in the baileys.

So with a total of 5 mackeral and a trevelly, it was time to head back before sunset. Bustard rarely lets me down.

i think thats a golden trevally

heres a little info on them......

The trevally is golden yellow with narrow black bars as a juvenile and become silvery iridescence with a few black spots as an adult with the bars very faint or non-existent. They have very fleshy lips and very few teeth on the lowerjaw as juveniles and as adults are without teeth.

    Hi Ros,

Even though the wind died down a little, still looks a bit breezy in the background, but well done on the catch. You obviously persevere in conditions that I would find difficult, like when I was in Hervey Bay the same week you were, but I headed home during a rain squall, while you were catching all the fish

I am just wondering about the Alvey in the G.T shot. Do you use this often for pelagics? I notice a rather tall Rod in the 1st pic too. I am asking because my large spinner for outside fishing is getting old and I can't find a replacement line ball bearing, and I look like getting into this sort of trip with my Uncle with a much larger boat than mine soon. Maybe my 6.5" Alvey would do the trick? Would be interesting to know your thoughts....

    Re: An Afternoon at Bustard

    Hi Scalem,

I am very happy to use alveys for pelagics, I know they don't look very flash and have a 1:1 ratio but I don't care.

I was using Penns but they both died after only a couple of years, and I was never happy with the drag system of those reels, they were always sticking.... I must mention before I go on, that I did take good care of them, I also had people look at them to see if something could be done to improve the drags, but no luck. On the other hand I once used a Penn senator, and found it to be everything I need for light game.

I know Penn make a good quality product, and I probably selected the wrong reels for the type of fishing I was doing.

As for the Alveys, they came with the Seafarer when I bought that. I didn't use them a first, but when I eventually did, I found them so reliable and low maintenence.

I really don't want this to sound like an Alvey commercial, but they just won't die, they will definately out live you and me. BTW they are not side cast, just a simple star drag. The one thing I do miss with the good overheads is the sound of their drags, the Alveys just make a sort of clattering noise.. lol.

The rods I use with the Alveys are a Silstar and an Ugly, I bought them both as blanks and built them. The Silstar is the better of the two, it has a fast taper which I prefer. The Ugly runs a very, very close second though.

As for casting slugs, the rod I use is also an Ugly Stick, and as I keep it up at my weekender I can't give you it's exact length, but I am almost certain it is not less than 9', maybe close to 12', I did rebuild it a couple of years ago.

It is probably a medium tapering rod. I use 8kg line with an eggbeater. It will cast 30-60 gram slugs for miles.

I am sure I will never find a better outfit for casting slugs, I also use my baitcaster on it.

I hope all that answers your questions, and thank you for asking.

    Cheers Roz

Glad you enjoyed your Birthday mackeral, any excuse to stop off for a chat, hoping next time there will be a lot more mackeral.

A Group 1 report and pics Roz. Looks a lovely spot to fish up there. Will get to one of the M&Gs up there sometime. Top boats the Seafarers. Is it a V Sea. I did Air Sea Rescue work at Sandgate for quite a few years and they swore by them. They ended up getting a 6.3m Vedette.

    Cheers
