Friday night World War 3 ??

Headed out Friday night to spot X off the other side of Moreton, feeling O.K. about my first session this year. Was blowing N.E. so the hopes weren't too high.
First drift - 4+ k.g. pearly things are looking better.
Had another few drifts and had 3 great pearlies and one of the biggest moses perch I've seen.
Heading towards my bag on pearlies some time around midnight and the plotter beeps - NO FIX......
Sat around for a while, had a beer, cold started the plotter a couple of times. Then set the radio to scan. Soon gathered that some numbnut had switched off the GPS system, either to fix a rogue satelite or because world war 3 had started, I'm not sure which.
So now I'm looking for a tit in 70m with no reference points. This of course did not eventuate, and I had to head home on dead reckoning. All I can say is thankyou GOD for the moon on friday, the storms that disappeared for the trip home, and also high tide over the pearl banks which I think I may have driven straight over the top of? (sounder showed 0.6m at one stage....)
Still I had my trip out, got fish and got home safe. Cam's happy again.
    Cheers all
No photo's had to knock them up quick and get to a kid's birthday party to ensure permission is granted for the next trip whenever that may be.

Good to see you made it home ok. It is amazing how much we rely on the GPS. I wonder how people caught fish before the GPS

You're not wrong. Reality came crashing in real fast the other night. Thankfully local knowledge helps along with good weather.
I remember being lost in the Bay on a nice winter morning when the fog set in. I was heading for the river mouth and ended up off Manly by the time the fog lifted!! Luckily I had the fuel to get back. I used to install differential GPS systems for a living, but don't have a receiver on board. This would have solved all my problems. I chipped jeff webster once for whinging about his gps being to blame for him running aground off Lucinda when there was a differential station there to give him the accuracy he wanted. Maybe he just got his own back.

    Mate-
I was inside deep T by a fair way
    Wind was NE 10-15 tops,
    Run was South.

Boat did 1.1kts to the South drifting, and 0.8kts to the South with the sea anchor out.

Judging by the weather forecast coming up, you won't get to see for yourself for a while.

Alot of it was hit and miss but you just had to line up the chimney on the 3rd building to the right with the moutain behind it and the hospital to the left, but then again marks were not over fished either

Yeah, used to fish a place called hawk's nest off Fraser as kids, and we were all stuffed for a while when the tree containing the nest fell over..
A mate of mine came back from a hot session off green island he found without GPS.
"Just line up the hospital with the third hill, and the second crane on fisherman's island with the control tower."
He was a bit gutted when I informed him that the cranes are mobile......

Shame there are no pics, would have loved to seen that pearly. Sounded as if you had a good time (isn't it always) & well worth the effort.

    Best of luck
