FrankOO, What kind of retrieve action do you find is most effective.

I've got 2 jigs but never had any success yet, mind I have only tried them twice I think.

Good fish to get on plastics that snapper and sweetie.

The Spangled Emperor was caught at Shallow Tempest but all the rest were caught at Deep Tempest.

The Short answer is No!!. We haven't taken bait out for years.

Make the commitment. Don't take bait on your next trip offshore. This way you will be forced to experiment with your plastics, but make sure you take plenty of spares because you will get smoked.

Keep your line near the bottom by casting ahead. Keep your line and leaders light and hang on.

The action is not really important. If your plastic is down there it will get hit.

Hi Frank,

There are few days you don't get a good fish these days, congratulations! It is true that the techniques you use have taken a life time to develop and it's paying dividends. I certainly took a while to lose my security blanket (bait) but I think it was only about 4 or 5 trips before I left those smelly pillies and squid behind.

Thank you for your advice some 4 years ago, even Moreton Bay is a hoot with SP's. There will be another post from me soon!!

hey guys
in the deep water [ around 80-90 meters ] frank and i use jig heads around one and a quatrer to one and a half ounce. on thursday we were using 6 inch red and white sluggos and they weren't reaching the bottom getting slammed three quaters of the way down. while the plastic is floating down grab the jig rod [ the plastic will take anywhere to a minute to reach the bottom ] and give it a few serious jigs always keeping in contact with the bottom. after a minute or so your plastic is now on the bottom wind the jig in as fast as humanly possible cos you will get slammed. give the plastic a couple of long draws up with the rod tip and let it hit the bottom. most fish will hit it on the drop so we keep on trying to make the plastic drop to the bottom.
in shallower water we use three quater to an ounce jig heads and the same method applies.
in really shallow water we use three eighth heads.
try to buy the heads with heavy wire cos they will straighten on even smallish fish
plastics to try are anything 4-5-6 inch. franky loves chartreuce but i like white. berkley gulp get a fair flogging as do the new berkley realistics range. these guides are for when there is minimal current flowing
