    Sammy Is Out There

When the weather looks like it’s going to be perfect, you just have to go. Some people won’t understand, but when the fishing disease takes over, you succumb to all its powers.

In any event we were going. The sea was flat and we wanted to get to Deep Tempest before the sunrise. My plastic hit the water first and it didn’t take long for the first Snapper to take the Stick bait ( NSW Plastics). Ben followed soon after with a Spangled Emperor that kept his rod bent for a long time. Those things know how to fight.

We had kept a couple of good fish for the table, so it was time for a different species. Both Ben and I decided to do a bit of Jigging and we were soon rewarded with a couple of small Samson Fish to about 5Kg, when this freight train hit Ben’s rod.

15kg of Samson Fish doesn’t sound like much, but they don’t know when to quit. This fish had Ben hanging on to the boat to stop from being pulled over the side.

This Samson Fish didn’t deserve to go back, but we put him back because we wanted someone else to feel the power of these monsters.

So if you are thinking of heading out to Deep Tempest, our mate Sammy is out there waiting for you. Make sure you tie yourself into the boat.

    Hi Perko,

Both Ben and I use the G.Loomis 7'6" 12-17lbs rods. They offer a great casting ability but are a fraction light for some of the bigger fish.

Great fun though. Your heart is in your mouth with every fish when you see the ben in your rod.

Thanks Frank OO. Setting myself up a similar outfit soon. What braid are you using on that outfit. I've been using my medium spin outfit with plastics at Turkey and doing well but I am missing a few bites. The lighter outfit would have to help. Do you take any bait out when you go?

Nice one Franko - looks like awesome fishing session on lures. I was just wondering whether anyone picks up samson fish on jigs, and there you go - nice one indeed.

Do sambo's normally have some wide vertical stripes, or is that only on the smaller versions?

    Cheers,

    Rob.

    Re: Sammy Is Out There

PS - I saw a post a while back where someone was asking for good pics of both Grass sweeties and Spanglies/Yellow lippers so they could identify their catch. That pic is Awesome. It really shows the colouration in the face very well. Good one.

    Hi Perko,

The braid is 12lbs fireline, (pretty pink)

The leader is also important the lighter the better.

If you use 80 lbs the fish become wary and if you use 20 lbs you get snapped off all the time.

    Re: Sammy Is Out There

    Hi Rob,

We have only been jigging for the last 8 months, but in that time we have caught Cobia, Amberjack, Pearlies, Snapper, Kingfish, and about 6 Samson Fish. Mostly in 60 - 90 Meters.

This Samson Fish did have vertical stripes but they faded very quickly. They certainly were not as pronounced as the juvinile specimens.
