When the weather looks like it’s going to be perfect, you just have to go. Some people won’t understand, but when the fishing disease takes over, you succumb to all its powers.
In any event we were going. The sea was flat and we wanted to get to Deep Tempest before the sunrise. My plastic hit the water first and it didn’t take long for the first Snapper to take the Stick bait ( NSW Plastics). Ben followed soon after with a Spangled Emperor that kept his rod bent for a long time. Those things know how to fight.
We had kept a couple of good fish for the table, so it was time for a different species. Both Ben and I decided to do a bit of Jigging and we were soon rewarded with a couple of small Samson Fish to about 5Kg, when this freight train hit Ben’s rod.
15kg of Samson Fish doesn’t sound like much, but they don’t know when to quit. This fish had Ben hanging on to the boat to stop from being pulled over the side.
This Samson Fish didn’t deserve to go back, but we put him back because we wanted someone else to feel the power of these monsters.
So if you are thinking of heading out to Deep Tempest, our mate Sammy is out there waiting for you. Make sure you tie yourself into the boat.
