I know a bloke who says he cuts the beaks off with a hacksaw and keeps it for a trophy! I got into a heated arguement with this bloke,
and he says they swim away with no problems at all.
Is this man killing these fish, and has anybody caught one without a
beak. Should this guy be reported for cruelty.
If the guy isn't just full of P&W and winding you up then I think you will find the marlin will die a slow death from starvation or infection. Marlin aren't my thing but I believe they use the bill to stun prey before swallowing it. Doesn't sound much different from finning sharks to me except that they get to swim away rather than just drown.
You could try reporting him, I just don't know how serious authorities will take it or if they could do anything without supporting evidence.
I've caught a number of sailfish with broken off bills that still look healthy. I don't believe myself that billfish stun their prey with thier bill before swollowing it. Form the marlin I have seen hit pushers they generally just grab their prey.
I think alot of misconception comes from anglers watch a billfish coming up to swollow a bait and seeing its bill out of the water swiping side to side. If you watch carefully their bill is actually above the bait and their actually trying to swallow the bait with their mouth.
The swiping action comes from the billfish using its hole body to swim. Dr Peperell did a write up on this awhile ago in Bluewater.
As for the cutting off of bills I believe that straddie could likely be correct about fish dying of infection. I think you should replace the pineapple with the largest bill in his collection and see how much he likes it.
LOL well said, and I dont think they hit the bait with the bill. I dont think
anyone knows the bills true purpose. Trophy hunting in this fashion
is cruel. but if the bill is cut off at the face of the fish it would surely
die?Idont know about that?I have seen a picture of a black marlin
with such a wound and it healed over nicely.
A beak for a beak i say!!! And i dont mean the 1 on his face... Imagine that as a trophy on marlins wall. I would have thought the bill was just for short bursts of high speed stability and maybe steering?
I understand why you got in a heated arguement, I think any reasonable person would also.
It is good that you have thought about reporting him. If you do thats great, if you dont while it is not something I would hope someone would let go and ignore at least you know what he is doing is not right.
It is just disappointing to say the least that someone would do such a thing.
Thesimmos that picture is a howler. Every time I look at it, I nearly
fall off my chair laughing my head off.COOL.
And as for the butcher, I will give it some thought.
i would have knoccked this bloke flat on his arse and walked away....no need for an argument....then maybe put a few bits and pieces in his fuel tank and a few holes in the bottom of his boat.
Jeffo! On the night, it came close to a bit of biff, and putting holes and a
fuel tank full of sugar sounds good , but that wont teach the di-khead
anything.I will have to think of another way to tell him that this sort of
trophy hunting is NOT ON !
A ban on marlin fishing, NOWAY! I am as passionate about the enviroment as the next guy, but I know for a fact alot of beak fisherman tag and release and do the right thing. This one individual is not going to put a stop to that. If he doesnt pull up I will dob him in.
I just got off the phone to our friend And the the first thing he said
was , are you calling to apologize! he allmost lit the fuse again.
I said go to aus fishing chat there is something you might find interesting
about marlin damage. after a chating for a while, we moved on.
He is not a bad bloke, he,s just a arrogant ######.
More money than brains.
And when you read this di-khead, I hope you wake up to your self!
