With the average sea conditions on Saturday afternoon it was decided that we would give murphy’s a go instead of punching all the way out to the banks. I have always thought murphy’s would be fished out so haven’t put any time in exploring the area. We spent an hour or so searching around and then trying to anchor up on a show of fish but the anchor wouldn’t hold. Eventually we just let it drag until it came up tight, a quick look at the sounder was not encouraging and the gps showed we were at least 50m from a structure that I had marked earlier. The call was made “bugger it, we’ll give it a go anyway”. For the first 2 hrs all we got was an average moses perch, an undersize maori cod and a whiptail. The whiptail was sent back down and something had a go at it but didn’t hook up. By this stage I don’t think anyone was confident that we were going to get any decent fish and I thought my suspicions of murphy’s being a bit of a desert were right, but just on dark the snapper came on. We had a great run of snapper/squire for about an hour, all caught on floaters. Ended up with 9 keepers up to 5.5kg and a big slatey bream. Next time I might think twice about the 40km run out to the banks when I can go out 10 and still catch a decent feed of snapper.
Great looking catch there Clint06 who cares if you cant get on your marks if you end up with a catch like that Ken

Nice catch Clint. Murphy's is only really a good option before first light or around dusk. They just don't want to know during broad daylight.
