    Re: Swains Reef

    Hey Bewdy
Your bringing back some great memories just talking about it.
Yep! I would have to agree with nev-e
I Can not push the KISS principal more here (keep it simple stupid)defiantly no offense intended.
Don't worry about the swivel's keep a dozen or so in your tackle box if you carn't leave home without em
Your looking at about a 15hr steam out to Swains , I would get the Dickie in a head lock and get him to show you the knot's n rig's they have been using in the past and practice practice practice!!!
Swain's is so different to you local fishing it's a bit like slappin a hook on the end of a bit of rope use a rock as a sinker and wack a bit of flesh on a rusty old hook and away you go.
One thing you will do is go through a heap of gear until you get a feel for the place so no doubt when you return you will be able to write a book on knot tying!
Out their brother is Big Day's , Bigger Night's , Big Fish , Bigger Stories , Sore Hand's but Sorer Head's. Na just kidding mate just make sure you bring back a photo of 2 BIG RED THINGS.My mate tommy trout & my favorite big bad red emperor. mmmmmmm!
Sadly you can never seem to have that perfect outfit for all occasions so once again use the KISS principal
Just to sum up even if you turned up with no fishing gear at all, you'll still make do and have a ball!!
I'm sure you will do just fine!

Don't know the boat or skipper your goin with but have been to Swains and beyond 7 times.(Diving & Fishing)
Great advise from everybody so far but just remember your in big fish territory so big baits means big fish.Even in the shallow's
Just a word of caution when fishing with heavy line. Most line cut's happen when trying to bust off that snag.
Sound's pretty dumb to mention i know but a couple of deep one's early in the trip can really handicap your ability to perform (EG.Max Amount Of FUN To Be Had) Another trick worth a mentioning #is instead of anchoring up on top of the reef (In the dories) on those sandy spot's for Mr Tommy Trout, try drifting & casting into the hole with a pilly on a gang of 5 or 6/0s but try and cast to the far side of the hole because when they know their hooked, make a run straight back into the coral , so be ready to hang on and i mean HANG ON. 50lb/80lb line here on a rod you can cast with and do some serious stopping.
Don't spend a fortune on the latest and greatest fishing gear, You will find that everyone else usually does, and don't use half of it.Believe it or not a heavy hand line with a running siker on about a 6/0 hook catches 90% of the fish everytime! so use your fist trip as a learning curve because i'm dead sure you will return.
I could go on & on mate but if the weather is kind your gona have a blinder! The Best Of Luck To You & Your Crew

Yep we'll all and myself give you all the advice we have had from our own outings at Swains for the gear to bring.

However all styles will work # from bottom bashing to drifting in the dories. A light sinker on heavy line around the shallows is the way to go Plenty of Burley #is the wat to attract them #

You'll probabaly be there for a week so why not try it all #

    Thanks Payney,

You guys are right! KISS is the way to go. I just want HUGS !!! (Hurry Up & Get Started) 1389 hours to go. lol !!!
I assume mean "deckie in a head lock" lol.
Its great to be able to discuss these things with guys with experience. I love to fish, go crabbing & prawning. I don't do any particularly well but enjoy it every time i go out. I don't eat fish but i love to provide my family and friends with fresh seafood when i can. I'm finding it hard not to think about the trip and what i may experience. I will be happy with just a "tommy trout or big bad red emperor" just to spur me on for future trips.

Thanks again for your time and knowledge

    Bewdy
