Thread: Mackerel eggs

BigE, don' t know what it is I'm interested to hear from matt. I'm just saying that such a line inquiry may have benefit to rec fishos. I just think we should(as fishos) support all research into marine biology/ecology. Some of the data (if you can call it that) that has been collected in the past and used to develop new zoning was largely BS. so in the future, further evaluation of zonings can use accurate data, that has been collected following scientific method.

    Re: Mackerel eggs

    Guys,
Matt already gave a short overview of his project in his initial post. He is feeding them to small reef fish (I think spiny chromis) which are not at all important for recreational fishos unless they are particularly interested in aquarium fish. It is more ecological than you are thinking, and is very unlikely to be funded by the same sources as any research for GBRMPA. I will let Matt expand if he so wishes.

The idea that research from a particular university is likely to be biased because of particular funding bodies is understandable from an outsider's perspective, but is misdirected. Any researcher biasing data to suit themselves or funding bodies would lose their career along with all credibility. It is simply not wirth the risk of getting caught.

As for the RAP, there was a mandate to close a certain proportion of the reef to damaging activities, so someone is going to miss out somewhere. Can't you just learn to operate around the plan? I have and it hasn't decreased my catch rate.

PS. He asked for Spanish Mackerel, not spotted mackerel eggs BigE. Maybe they were the only photos you had to dangle though?

Oh yeah and before you ask, I do not work for the university.

too right leo, its called scientific fraud. But if its found that aggregations of small fish consume large amounts of fish eggs, then its possible that there may be a lower than normal level of a particular fish in any given area, hence this may be taken as overfishing (thus affect rec fishos). I was talking about how this research wasn't abstract and that we have to fight fire with fire so to speak by supporting further research. The government uses collected data to implement new zonings etc, so we (as fishos) needs to support research that extends our knowledge base so as to make more informed dececions/choices or be able to put forward plausible arguments. From what I read in the paper the meeting regards to the inshore fin fishery sh*t slinging event. No good will come of it.
