    Thanks Guys,

I have been a bit slack Ollie, I haven't put any posts up for months. #

Backlash, The Plastics are the new Gulp 8" in the orange an green. #Jason Bird from Sundown Marine put me onto the Neuclear Chicken and they have proven to be incredible. #The trouble is that I keep running out. #Make sure you order me some more Jason.

The Jig Heads are only 1/4oz because I like to let them swim down very slowly. #That's why the Kingies and Amberjack hit them on the way down.

Jackash, #Eric Grell has just started his own business and has come out with a massive range of rods from the S10 used for Snapper to the Blue water big guns. Eric has also made me a fantastic 24Kg stroker for this years Marlin season.

"Big Bertha" is just an over-sized S10 but it has a whole lot of power in the bottom end than can actually stop these freight trains. #The strongest Fighters were actually the two Spangled Emperor. #Each of them went about 6kg. #Massive runs that took over 100 meters of line. #Heart in the mouth type of fishing.

Hey Frank, if the jig heads are 1/4... how do you fare if there is a decent current running? Do you cast way up stream and if you do - how do you know how much slack to let out - in say 60plus metres of water?

hope you dont mind me asking - feel a bit like I know you - as I've fished with Brian and Droo - both speak very highly of your fishing prowess.

    Thanks,

    Hi Adamy,

The reason I visit Ausfish is to get as much informationas I can. A lot of the guys have helped me in the past so you can ask as many questions as you like.

I find that when I fish Hutchies in about 40 meters of water there is only a small amount of current so I always cast about 40 Meters ahead of the drift. In this depth you can actually use the very light jig heads although I still use the 6/0 hooks.

The Plastics are not really important as long as you feed them on the hook correctly. Correctly is easy to see because they swim without doing circles and the tail vibrates. Ben, My usual fishing partner loves Gulp 4" white, Eric loves the Green with Gold fleck and I use anything I can get my hands on but I have favoured the 8" Gulp Neuclear Chicken.

As you get to the 80 Meter mark you really do need to use the 3/4 oz Jig head because the current is normally a lot faster. (Deep Tempest)

Same goes for Barwon Banks Light weight to 1/4oz up to 40 Meters and heavier the deeper you go.

Don't be afraid to use the 1 1/2 oz in 120 meters of water in current bacasue you will still get your fish.

I use plastics because I consistently catch bigger and better fish with more variety than I ever did with Bait. ( Live bait is always acceptable)

    Hope it helps

Re: A Lesson From The Master

Thanks Frank.... It helps a lot... Fishing the bay with placcies - with some helpful tips from other Ausfishers has helped me to develop technique - but outside is a bit different.

I have heaps of Gulp jerk shads in 5inch that we use for local bay squire - and some 7" that I'm saving for outside... Next question is braid and leader - what strength do you recommend? Going to have to beef up my hook selection though - because the 1/4, 3/8 and 3/4's I bought are all 3/0 - 4/0 are you using TT jigheads or Nitros? From the pics I'm guessing TTs.

Fishing 40plus metres is much different to fishing 10 in the bay - what action should I be using? should I be winding higher into the water column and then letting it fall back to the bottom or the normal lift jerk and let if fall (and repeat )

    Thanks again!!!

    Adam

    Gidday Adam,

I use both TT and Nitro, If you use the bigger weights, some of the Jig heads have a really thick shaft so you will split the plastic. TTs and Nitro are fine.

It has been proven many times that the lighter you fish the more you catch. That is a fact. The trouble is that the lighter you fish the more you lose. That is also a fact. ( No smart Comments Please)

Sheila was blown away a number of times on the weekend usiong 30 lb braid with a 20lbs trace. We upgraded to a 40lbs trace and she was still blown away. The trace broke on the knot at the hook every time.

Could we have loosened the drag? Maybe, but the fish have a tendancy to swim you into the reef.

I was using 30 lbs Sensor Braid from Sundown Marine and 60 lbs Trace. I caught the lot but the drag was hard on.

When you cast ahead, I forgot to mention to leave your bail open. This will allow your lure to drop vertically. The line will go slack when it hits the bottom (depending on the current)now you can close the bail.

The action is just a slight upward movement repeated quickly three times and then let it drop. You only have to lift the jig about a meter or two.
