Vertico and Cloud 9 Tuna Trip

    Gaday all.
    What a day.
Passed up going out yesterday in favour of today and it was perfect, Vertico and myself went out off the Goldie for a Tuna and the possibility of a mackerel. Well the mackerel , Not today.
    The Tuna were everywhere.
Straight out of the seaway and the birds where working second or third Cast 5Kg Macktuna. I thought this is going to be a great day.
We took a punt and headed north to Curran Cove.
Bad idea, very few birds working and not much on the surface.
Headed south and there wasn’t much happening through to the seaway.
I’m thinking this could be a tuff day. Only a couple fish and not a bird to be seen.
    Head to Narrow Neck Nothin.
    Its getting grim.
Stuff it keep heading south till we find something.
Right on the southern end of Palmie there were about 8 or 10 boats milling around and i could see a flock of birds working over behind the fleet of boats so i went around them to the birds and we were on Macktuna and Bonito and Striped Tuna . the bonito where thick. We had a blast casting the schools and having them push and barge each other out of the way to climb all over the lures.
It was like a mini version of a top end video of the Gt’s chasing a lure.
At a guestamate we caught and released 20 or 30 for the day. We kept 8 Bonito and a Striped Tuna.
I should have bleed the stripy as my wife had a taste and said it was sweet and i hadn’t even bleed it so what would they be like if you bleed them?
2 best fish 4 the day were a pair of 5 odd KG Macktuna .
the most fun was the Bonito hundreds of them all around the Boat for probably 10 or 15 minutes hitting the slugs every other cast..
the best runs had to be the Striped Tuna, 2kg stripe go easy as hard as a 5 Kg Macktuna, and they smash the lure right at the boat and blast off into the sunset.
Here’s few shots of the day.

    Hi Jamie,

Well you certianly picked the weather, had pretty much written Sunday off but did set the alarm anyway and wasn't dissapointed , some nice fish you got there too. Pity about no bait at couran thought they would have been starting to build up there by now. Hope this weather comes back for the weekend.

    Cheers

what size were the bonito? Seems to me they are mostly little rats under 1 kg, but I have caught the odd one around 3 kg. Gotta agree the striped tuna are great fun - fast runs and rapid changes of direction.

Re: Vertico and Cloud 9 Tuna Trip

ya the Bonito all around the 500Gr mark perfect baits.
if i'd had known the striped tuna tasted good i would have bled the buggers and kept a few more.
the wife tried a bit RAW as we both like Susmi and its as good as LT for the taste her coment was its very sweet.
so maybe the bigger they get , the more you need to do preperation wise to get good eating from them??
or the big ones stuff themselves with the fight and thats the very dark meat !
dont know but one things for shore.
next sunday I'm back for susmi.
and i'll bleed them this time.and put them on ice.
    Cheers Cloud 9
