    First Sail!

    Cracker of a morning today (Sat) in the Moreton Trench. #Took a young cousin out for his first go at Pelagics. #Just out for two hours until the wind went over 20, but;

    1x # 2.5m 50kg Sailfish boated
    1x # 1.3m 15kg Mahi Mahi boated
    1x # Mahi Mahi lost at the boat
    1x # 1.5m 20kg Striped Marlin broken off at the boat

    All released. My first Sail and first Marlin!!!

    We had two double hookups; 2x Mahi then a double on the Sail and the Marlin.

    Not bad for 2 hours ... Think he's now got unreasonable expectations ... # # #

    Hi Nigel,

    What Jeffo says is probably right - this time of year the little blacks light up like an Xmas tree and have gorgeous stripes down their body. In saying that, we did tag a Striped marlin in close this time last year and I called it for a Black, but the photos later proved it to be a Striped (Large Dorsal was the giveaway).

    WELL DONE !! All those hours have paid off !

    Go the Pakulas !

    Cheers

    As for the black/striped, it broke off while leadering so it was close and I thought it was a Striped ... but as it was my first Marlin, I can't be sure.

    You're probably right that it wasnt 50kg (but even with two of us trying to lift it out of the water, it sure felt like it), however I think it was more like 30kg. The photo was at an angle which makes it look thinner than it was. The inside beam of my boat is 8'6" and we couldn't straighten it out!

    Anyway back again this weekend if the weather is better ...
