Spanner Crabs off Moreton Is.
Gidday guys.
I was wondering if anybody knew about catching Spanner crabs on the West side of Moreton Island near Cowen. We are going there late August and have a boat. I have purchaced a couple spanner (flat)pots and would like to know where and how deep etc.

Hi Lachie
I'm not sure about spanner carbs off Cowan, but I can tell you that they do come in on the southern end of Moreton Island from time to time.
It is far more likely that you'll catch them off the east side of Moreton in reasonably shallow water. The professional spanner crabbers work that side of the island - probably in 25-60m of water. Hope that helps a bit. Ron Collins, Ed.

Hi Lachie
when i was fishing for a living i used to drop witches hats off on the way..up to 5 tied together around 5 meters apart in up to 60 metres of water..takes some pulling up tho if you dont have a hooker..but was worth it on the return home if the fish were off..
cheers.
