Well I'll be! Are all these wrecks still in the river and not been removed? Obviously the salt water has done her job with a lot of them, but I find it hard to believe there is that many that have been left on the bottom.

    Re: Unknown Wreck

Mystery solved the wreck is the captain neilson..was put onto a guy in mineral house and he was very helpful..to get a rundown on historical wrecks one needs to contact the RAN. Hey nugget i was telling him about the list you passed on, he asked for a copy of the list as their records only go back something like 30 years. He is going to get back to me so if you like I will pass your name onto him or his name onto you.
    cheers.

    Re: Unknown Wreck

Just received a reply from RAN...it has been passed onto the historical side of things to do with the navy. Apparantly there is some WW11 stuff in the bay that we don't know or shouldn't know about mmmm..however i did recieve some feedback on the phone that some historical wrecks are okay to dive on or anchor beside but you are not allowed to fish on...the plot thickens..will keep you all informed
    cheers.

    Re: Unknown Wreck

    Hi Gruntahunta
As far as records go - there has been no salvage of the wrecks listed.
So they, or part of them, is still there.
The best way to find accurate info is to go through the newspaper archives at the time of the wreck.
That is where you'll get the most detail - unless somebody has researched it and is prepared to give you the information!

    Re: Unknown Wreck

Well the RAN replied to my email. The captain Neilson was lost on the 18/09/64 with 9 lives lost. And the database for historic wrecks is managed by the Western Australia Maritime Museum.

    Re: Unknown Wreck

I found this thread while doing a search. so sorry for such a late reply ?

The salvage operator was a guy named Joe Engwirda and your right he is retired up at airlie beach and his salvage business still runs under his Son's management.
He and the police diver involved both won the "george Medal " for bravery during that rescue.
He is a personal friend of ours and has told me a few stories of the salvages he has done over the years.

A very unique job being a salvage diver and his health has suffered for no doubt being under water for so many years.

Just had to reply even though this was such an old post.

    Cheers

    Mick

    Re: Unknown Wreck

    Hey Nuggett,

Are you sure the Lucinda SS went down in February 1896 at Bishop Island?

I thought it was March 1896.

The only reason I'm questioning you is that I can recall being at a party with the Breaka Girls on Bishop Island when she went down. Pretty sure it was March......

    About the eighteenth from memory.
