Re: Rex Hunt or ET
Micheal,
I've seen that show "Fishing WA" on Foxtel.
The 2 presentors are bit of a clown. But they get into a lot of fish. Like Real estate, fishing shows are about location, location, location. WA and the Top end are crawling with fish. I hope so I'm off there next week.
I personally don't mind the shows about far away places. These locations are great to film. One days filming and you have got a show. In hard fished area fish all weeks and you are flat out putting together 5 minutes.
My brother was at Liverpool river, N.T.(catches of 100+ barra a week are the norm) when ET was filming. Filmed 1 day for loads of Barra, and his personal best Barra. Spent rest the week fishing. He fished North QLD for a whole week and barely got enough footage for his show.
Its expensive to have a film crew(3-4 people), not getting any thing on video.
Brownies(local QLD show) had a segment where they had a "local guru" show off his technique and his favourite spot.
I'd agree that fishing shows are like all lifestyle shows, there are entertainment. Showing all the technical details will bore the average Joe who fishes once a year whilst on holidays.
Mag are better for showing technical stuff. T.V is good for action and pretty pictures.
I'm disappointed about missing E.T. @ New Caledonia. I was thinking about having a go there. I believe the fishing is pretty tough.

Re: Rex Hunt or ET
I watch Rex for the entertainment value alone, he gives me a grin from time to time.
There is an excellent program here in South Australia Called Fishing and Boating S.A. that would rate amongst my favourites, we try not to miss it , even the repeats

One thing to remember with these shows is that they are not necessarily aimed at the people who already fish. This would be preaching to the converted. I think alot of time they show what you can catch if you take it up and how much fun and enjoyment you can get from it. My young son can't get enough of ET or Rex, dad on the other hand would love to throw a brick at the "bearded burbler.
Cheers, Clutter.

Re: Rex Hunt or ET
I was channel surfing about a month ago and came accross a show called "Tinnies and Tackle with Thommo(you know the older crazy camp oven cooker on Creek 2 Coast)fishing the Pin and surrounding waters. It was on Briz31, I checked with them and they tolds us it was a 'one off' show since he moved to another network but there are plans of making another 4 or 5 tapes to produce another series.
Thommo with his caravan and boat in tow looks the average bloke to me catch a fish, cook up a feed and wash it down with a few ales.
I was told by the brother of a camera operator on the same network that a lot of "prework" goes into the location so Rex has better fortune that the average joe like 2 weeks of berlying the same spot?? would this be possible or was he having a lend of me? Rex rocks up (decked out curtesy of product endoresment) to a sand bar in the middle of the boardwater, first cast of the fly and whammo monster lizard. I wouldn't mind having a crew berley our spots for 2 weeks before we get there??
I agree with you guys....makes for good entertainment and gets me even more toey to get out again for a fish.
Cheers

Re: Rex Hunt or ET
I propose next Saturday 2:00pm BBQ and beers at Phil's with the odd video thrown in.
Let's see 1,500 members - lets say 250-300 in SE QLD. Phill we'll need 18 whole rib fillets and probably 8 kgs of onion.
I like my rib fillet thick - so if you ask your butcher to slice it thick that would be good. Oh and could you have a couple of bottles of lemonade on hand just in case I need a "dash"
Seriously - Rex went to Noosa quite recently and for those who read the fishingnoosa website you'll know he was up there for three days and they shot close to six different segments.
It was all aranged by Davos bait and tackle. His offshore trip was a free charter "plug" for BLue water charters and his trip on Lake McDonald was also organised with the tackle shop expert who runs tour/charters/hire out there.
From the look of Rex's offshore trip he was out near chardons off Noosa because he was behing the headland and too far out to be at Sunshine. That's about 18kms out from Noosa river mouth and most people in a decent size boat can reach.
I big cod for a day's charter isn't much to write home about - then again it hasn't been firing much lately.
But I'm like the others - working in the industry you'll find that a 10 minute segment on telly takers about 4 hours to put together so these guys don't have that much time on there hands so they need to go where they are "guaranteed" to catch fish.
Not much of a fishing show where the host doesn't catch fish.

Re: Rex Hunt or ET
Rex kept me sane for nearly 2 years.
Let me preface the following with the statement that 3 years ago I would have been lucky if I fished once a year.
We got back last year from living in England for 2 years. Rex is on the Discovery Channel over there just about every day, several times a day right up to midnight.
Now, when you're living in a god-awful, cold, dismal hole (I could add a couple of expletives here, but it's a mixed board) like England, a bloke needs to try and stay in touch with his Aussie-ness, so I took to religiously watching Rex at every opportunity - drove the missus and kids mad with it, in fact.
There's nothing better than sitting in a nice warm comfy lounge chair watching a bloke sweating out while working a large barra (or anything really), particularly when you look out the window and it's sleeting or even snowing.
The other thing is that the local population over there is so damned negative about everything that it starts to rub off - so again, it's great to watch some fun-loving, optimistic Aussies having fun doing something they obviously love.
Anyway, it got to the point over there that every time I saw Rex I got more homesick - so we told them to stick their country and got home 3 years ahead of schedule.
I now fish at every opportunity (some weeks I go every night) and I'm loving it more, the more I go.
I've got Rex to thank for my renewed interest in fishing and my renewed nationalism.
So, leave the poor bugger alone he's doing a great job.

Re: Rex Hunt or ET
The guys that do the "Fishing WA" program also put together "Fishing Wild Australia", which has just finished a run on channel 9 on Saturday mornings (when most of us are still at work or gone fishin')and was in my opinion the best of the shows for down to earth fishing action. Even had a girl catchin' a few (& fairly tidy she was too).
Hopefully it will come back for another series.

Re: Rex Hunt or ET
hey yeah I agree with begsy, leave this fishin personalities alone, as they generate heaps of interest in fishing especially for the kids. Sure it is a great business for them and they make a squillon out of it but they do the right thing with fishing and promote it as the wonderful family recreation that it is so lets not forget that part of it fellas.
