(3) Snapper
• The correctness of the extent of recreational fishers on the Snapper population needs to be properly assessed in terms of catch and release in order to determine the true extent of recreational fishers on this species.
• The trawl by-catch problem needs to be addressed with stricter measures to types of net usage. There is also a need for closed areas on and around the rocky reef.
• It is suggested that in-shore fishing of Snapper be limited to certain areas for both commercial and recreational fishers. The QFS should consider banning commercial trawling in in-shore areas that are breeding areas or juvenile habitats for this species, eg, the Southern Moreton Bay region.
• In considering the long-term viability of Snapper, regard must be paid to the food source of the species.
• Consistent with those submissions already made above, reseeding of stocks should be implemented.
