well, ill give this my best shot as i am a chem student.

the active ingredient in most soaps is phenoxyethanol, which breaks down the dirt molecules and stuff on your hand, is neutralised by salt water as the alkaline nature of the water counteracts the scidic nature of the soap. but can vart between anti bacterial soaps and just normal ones. i think you best be is to use natural soaps which do not contain these chamicals, but i havent exactly tried.

i hope you arent washing your hands in the water, that cant be good for the environment now can it .

    hope this helps

What ever you do Mick, don't wash your hands in hot water. That opens the pores and the smell will stay for days.

I find cold water with the juice of a lemon added does the trick. I sometimes take this in a old juice bottle thingie.

I also carry a small bucket onboard and everytime I touch a bait, I wash my hands in the salt water and dry them.

You could waer gloves, get someone else to bait up, or just only use Lures ???

    Hi

Saw some "Fishermans Hand Cleaner" the other day at The Gem tackle shop. It is a citrus based product, is in a small white tub with orange label and has a screw on lid. It is an orange coloured cream.

Would be interested to know if anyone has tried it and hear what they think of it.

One lady up this way (darwin) sells natural soaps down at one of the local markets. Anyhows all these soaps are all natural products (so if the shem student is right may help), and are scented with natural oils. There is this one called fishermans bait, tis a aniseed (sp?) bassed soap designed to take human scent away from your hands while fishing. She also sells this one called "camping" this soap is made up of things to repel mozzies and that.

I use the aniseed one for washing me hands after using mozzie or sun burn cream. Also store the soap in the same box as the rubbers so they pick up a tad of scent also...

But for me nothing beats that bait taste on the top of ya stubbie, cause then ya know ya fishing...

    Hi Guys,

Haven't used that particular product but I am a BIG fan of citrus based cleaners. They are very easy on the skin and are extremely good cleaners. Being citrus based means they smell good too so Fishy smalls are taken care of as well.

    Worth a look.

why not just use Saltwater Soap?? its a soap bar you can buy from Whitworths or any Chandlery.. works like normal salt in fresh water.. and apparently doesnt damage the enviroment..

As a former chem student (currently studying IT) and a current service station worker I also recommend citrus based cleaners to get rid of any bad smells.

Interesting line, I used to watch my brother in law catch Barra after Barra in the Territory and even though my lure was identical nary a strike. Then i used to rub my lure in the gills of his Barra and bingo strike for strike. Whether your lure picks up some contamination who knows but it works. On the subject of removing fish smell from your hands a bit of Keens mustard powder works a treat. just dont chew your finger nails after.

Loboy,Funny you should mention that but in my dreamtime a few moons ago if I got a jew when surf fisin' the next bait was wiped in the mouth & 'round the head & the "partner' would also end up on the beach next to its mate, nowdays I would be letting both go.Jeeze getting old/soft or what.Cheers T.><> ><> ><>.

Re: all food on the boat tastes like bait

I've got a mate who insists on cutting up all the fish and crab bait when we go fishin'.

We only use the freshest of bait, so if it gets on the sangers, oh well....

His theory is that it helps mask all those fish repellant chemicals we male Homo sapiens sapiens piscivors make.

Apparently male human sweat contains a chemical (l-serine (help me out here chem students!)) that fish can detect at a couple of drops per olympic size pool. Of course, since they can detect it at such low concentrations, it is no surprise that they also don't like it....

Use fresh bait. If its not good enough for your sangas, its not good enough for your fish. Unless you are using Asian fish sauce to spice up your baits.
