Chips in fish help net poachers.
Fisheries officers in Victoria are using modern technology in their fight against illegal fishing.
Golden perch and murray cod found in drum nets in Pyramid Creek, near Kerang, in northern Victoria were implanted with microchips and returned to the nets.
The microchips were found the next day in fish fillets stored in a freezer and three men will soon be charged for using commercial fishing equipment to take native fish.
The Victorian Minister responsible for fisheries, Bob Cameron, says poaching is the biggest threat to the sustainability of Victoria's fisheries.
"Illegal fishing means that a lot more fish are being taken out of our waterways then what they otherwise would which puts pressure on the sustainability of our fish which means that legitimate fishermen aren't catching as many fish as they should," he said.
Wonder if they were pros or rec fishos - deserve it anyway.
