as a further post to the question about fish growing new scales here is a photo of the jack in question now settling into tank life , he seems happy enough in the fresh for any one interested l simply put him into an aerated esky for 48 hours with the garden hose on drip , the missing scales dont seem a problem yet , this fish came out of the coomera river on saturday
Town tap water is a bit of a no no for fish tanks.
It is treated with chlorine and ammonia. Ideally you should neutralise it with the stuff you get for that purpose from an aquarium shop.
I know you are trying to get the fish into fresh water, but a bit of salt (1 teaspoon to 4.5 litres) is commonly added to keep disease at bay in freshwater aquarium fish. Why 4.5 litres? That's the old imperial gallon. Near enough probably good enough.
They will certainly grow new scales; seen it with my own two little eyes.
Easy to convert over to dead fresh food if my one at home is any guide. Wait until the weather warms up, you'll have to count your fingers when you feed once the tank warms a bit.
Make sure you have good lids, and if necessary, something on the lids to hold them down; if that fish hits the afterburners, a standard 3mm thick lid is not going to do the job.
rick thanks for the advise , jack seems to be doing ok he is feeding well on live herrings he shares the tank with two young barra , he did get a bit of tail rot when l put him in the tank but it hasnt got any worse , l did put some salt in the tank when l put him in and l add say half a bucket of fresh salt water when l pour in the herrings , if its ok l might seek out your advise from time to time jacks certianly look great in the tank , not to keen on putting my fingers in the tank any more
what a top idea. i wasn't aware salt fish could convert to fresh.
i might get some light tackle and minature hooks and have me some fun.
btw, what about undersize rules???

you knew how red my jack would go had him 4 a year and not much colour yet. maybe we could hook up and u could show us how to catch a jack i feed him cichlid staple colour enhancing pellets he lives with a big barra and there mates so is it true you can convert salt water fish to fresh always wanted a 8 foot salt but to dear for water changes i live at nudgee beach but water to murky how well do you think a long tom will convert?
if you have a barra and a jack living in a tank it is easy to convert them to fresh water just add approx a litre a day of fresh water depending on how big your tank is the fish will go over to frash no problem remember both these fish live happily in fresh water in the wild , it is probably a good idea to keep some salt in the water see previous pos tone tea spoon of aquarium salt to 4.5 littres of water this is a lot less than the ocean but it helps stop infections , if you r jack hasnt any colour it probably wont get any my fish is red but l expect him to loose color over time keeping the water spotless will help as will live baits like mullet and herring good luck
after one week jack and his bazza mates are going great
guns feeding well actually to well see splash marks on tank , barra are pigs , jacks have attitude read keep fingers away
tank is five foot long , four feet deep , two and half feet wide , and underneath l have another tank 3 foot by 3 foot filled with bio balls which act as the trickle filter system ,
the fish are going great guns on a diet of fresh herring , although the barra will eat frozen bait they dont give the jack time to get any so have to put in at least one herring to big for barra to swallow , the way the barra are growing l will so have to either release one or give it away or it will get to crowded in the tank ,at the moment l have to do weekly one third water changes
you will find as the jack gets biger he will get more bad temped. mate has one he feeds it pillies, allong with a barra and a big bass, all in fresh. he had to eat the last jack he had when it got to 50cm he couldn't clean the tank any more, jack was too vicious.he has a new smaller one now, still has to get wife to dangle pillie at other end of tank for cleaning perposes
