How can I catch mullet
I want to fish for jrewies down here in ballina and for me Herring just dont cut it, so aside from all the usual jokes:- move up here and you can get heaps with a cast net. Has any one got any tips. I am a legal fisherman and want to know if there is any consistent method to getting them on rod and reel, for livies, and I mean the bigger ones not poddy's, hook size, bait floats etc. I know where there is heaps of them just need to learn to catch them, thanks.

burley heavily and then fish with the method nictim described.
we also used to get a heap around all of the boat morings around here. they were visable under and behind the yacht's. we would use a hand line loaded with 1kg line and a no.12 hook and a tiny peice of dough or bread. drop the bait down to where the fish could be seen and watch for them to take it. we found that watching closely and stricking the second they took the bait was the key to success. good luck.

They hang around the pipes down here, if there is a school do you need to burley. and how far under the float do you have the bait? thanks

Re: How can I catch mullet
i would still burley just to get them in a bit of a feeding frenzy, that way they wont be as suspicous of a hook. set the bait at about the same depth the fish are at. i highly recomend getting some 1g line an no.12 hooks.

Re: How can I catch mullet
Hi I'm in qld but have heard a good idea from a mate. tie several small hooks to a rubber band with short lenghts of 1kg line then bait hooks with dough, roll a slice of bread into ball and place in rubber band this acts as burley and gets the action happening were ur hooks are, spoose u tie this to a float etc

another spin on snapperhead's idea is to put a small piece of cotton wool on the hooks. ive used this method in the surf at kingscliff with top results. saves rebaiting the hook also. hang the rubber bands(x2) off a brass ring and tie the line to that. very fresh french stick is the way to go for between the rubber bands. try it in the surf when they are running when bled they taste fantastic.
