OK, Have borrowed a digital camera to take out in the boat a few times and have found it to be a great thing. Pitty I did not have it with me the other day ( or any other camera for that matter ) when I caught a Marlin.
I thought that I could get something fairly good for about $500-
I've just bought the Pentax Optio S for my fiance for xmas. I got it for $549 from JB Hi-Fi, they had the best price around - not only on the Pentax but on a number of other brands aswell. Plus they match/beat any competitors price.
As for the camera itself, I havn't used it yet but I did a fair bit of research and found it to be the best value for money in that price bracket. It's got some really good features e.g. panorama shot. It got a good write up in one of the latest camera magazines where it was compared against all the other models in the same price/function bracket (the guy in camerahouse showed me).
Hope this helps,
DC
Very hard to go pass the Kodak range of cams! They come with a self charging USB cradle with automatic transfer to your PC and excellent editing software. Think about the latest hot item where they also can sit on a cradle that allows you to print out direct from it without going via your PC. Costs about 60 cents a pic I think per high quality service. Of course, if you want after sales service forget Kodak! All their stuff goes to the Phillipines for service and it is probably cheaper to buy a new cam. I have a minor crack in the top viewing menu window (about 15 x 7 mm) and to repair it is ........ $275,00!! A zoom attachment is also a good purchase as many of the Mums and Dads range of cams are pretty basic in this area. Hang the expense!
Other than that, great stuff!
Just two things to add......make sure it has an OPTICAL ZOOM at least 3X.......pixel count of 3.2 is better quality.....above this the $'s mount up.
Good luck with the camera you choose.
Cheers Brent
hi snelly just got myself a new olypmus mju 300 photo contentail at mt gravatt have them on sale for $598
like the fact that it has a metal body and is splash proof
now i just have to get out on the water and catch some fish os i can get some good pic's to post 8) 8)
presonly i have a sony mavica
the good thing about this on is it take both a memory stick and a 1.44mb floppy which means no soft wear needed just place the floppy in and off you go
BUT i am working the brownie points up on the misses because i would love to get one of these new underwater digatals
great for those action shots!
Just this morning saw on TVSN (foxtels shopping channel) a Samsung digital camera with 12x optical zoom and 4.2 megapixels advertised for $599. I thought that was pretty good value. [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]
Oh ... I can take mine underwater - it's just the extra $500 I had to pay on top for the marine housing
And then there's the time the boat sunk and I had just taken the camera out of the housing and forgot to put it back in - [smiley=bigcry.gif] [smiley=bigcry.gif]
Please don't go there - I still feel the pain [smiley=oops.gif]
Thanks everyone for your feedback - I absolutley loath buying electronics - But these things are great its just choosing the right one - I need a PHD camera ( Push Here @#$%head )
