    Taxidermist

Whats everyone's opinion on the taxidermist?

What type of effort is required to keep the fish in good condition after catching it??

Lastly what size spainard or wahoo would most ppl consider a good size to get done?

    Re: Taxidermist

I've never used a taxidermist, so can't comment on what is required to keep the fish in good shape to be hung on your wall - but i'd suggest you'd need plenty of ice! Seen plenty of fish that have been done though, mostly trout in NZ i do admit. A taxidermist has got a place for some people. I suppose if you do land a whopping big wahoo, marlin etc, you may be inclined to hang it above the bar in your den. Good talking point!

Mate of mine has a big flatty mounted on his bar.
The size would be illegal today as it is bigger than the max allowable to keep.
The work was performed by a guy in Gladstone CQ and I must admit is damn good.
Oneday I'll get a nice spaniard or snapper worthy of taxidermist.

I understand the fish need to be kept on ice and as fresh as possible.

From what I know the best way to aproach it is to take a photo as soon as possible after you catch it, with the fins held or propped into a natural position. Then the fish must be frozen in a flat position as quickly as possible. The photo helps to get the colors right later. If the photo can be taken while the fish is still alive all the better.

One way to do it is to get a plaster cast one done.

If you have caught a Xlb Barra for instance you can contact someone that does casts, give them the weight and length and they can match it to a cast they have in stock. You can usually choose from a few different types of displays, jumping, straight, etc.

This way you can let your fish go but still have a trophy to hang on the wall. From what I hear the plaster casts look just as good as a skin mount and will last a lot longer too.

yeah JB look at it this way... if you dont catch that spaniard this year you can get a plaster cast and say you got one i like the sounds of the plaster cast better, at least that way the fish is going to be wasted. any one know how much this sortta thing costs?
