“Bluey on Wheels” hits the road
February 20, 2003
A new $90,000 NSW Fisheries’ educational initiative, “Bluey on Wheels” - fully funded by the recreational fishing licence - is heading off on its first major road trip. First stop: Imlay Street, Eden, on the far south coast, on Friday 27 February, 9am until 11:30am.

NSW Fisheries Director-General, Steve Dunn, said the three mobile community education units are an important initiative, and an excellent example of fishing licence fees at work.

“Named after NSW’s official state fish, ‘Bluey’ the Blue Groper, Bluey on Wheels is a powerful, effective – and vibrant - new community education tool. It will be making regular appearances at outdoor events, trade shows, festivals and school visits,” Mr Dunn said.

“Each Bluey on Wheels mobile community education unit will visit coastal NSW under the guidance of our knowledgeable NSW Fisheries Education Officers and Fishcare Volunteers.

“The main aim of Bluey on Wheels is to help spread the word about how we can all work together to safeguard our fish, other aquatic life, and the environment for the future.

“We want to make sure that our children – and their children – continue to enjoy the simple pleasure of going fishing.

Each Bluey on Wheels unit includes built-in audio visual equipment, displays, educational brochures and a ‘touch tank’.

“The ‘touch tank’ will be filled with a terrific range of marine life that people can actually hold, to give them a truly authentic ‘hands-on’ educational experience,” Mr Dunn said.

Bluey’s sides open up to provide sun protection for visitors, and a drop-down table gives room to display the touch tank, and to sell recreational fishing licences.

Bluey on Wheels will also be on display at the following south coast destinations:

Friday 27 February, 9 am until 11:30am - Eden, Imlay Street
Friday 27 February, 1-4pm, Merrimbula - Corner of Market and Beach St
Saturday 28 February, 8.30-11.30am, Narooma - Apex Park (neat to Bar Beach car park)
Sunday 29 February, 10am to 12 noon, Ulladulla - Princes Highway (Tourist Information Centre)
Sunday 29 February, 1.30-4pm, Jervis Bay - Owen St, Huskisson

when is QLD going to wake up and smell the cheese and follow NSW with fishing licences and stuff like this! hopefully before its to late. i was thinking the other day about the lack of policing of all the rules and regs that we must obey each time we are on the water.... i reckon that they could set up a "volenteer inspectors" type thing... i mean hell, i would do a course and give up a weekend a month to go out and do all the random inspections!
