    Re: undersize fish

Hey Phil,,, some of the other guys may confirm, but is my understanding that there is a certain amount of undersize by-catch allowed with the commercial fishers, so all is cosha.

I've been down the fish markets at Raby Bay a few times and seen some drastically undersize fish there eh. I don't know commerical regulations myself, so I wouldn't comment....but that's just what I've seen on multiple occasions.

Yep,i have seen the same last weekend in one of the shops in Chinatown,in the Valley, Brisbane.
I almost took photo in the shop, but thought better of it. My understanding is also that a certain amount is allowed as by-catch.
Still, makes the blood boil >...A shop full is allowed there, yet if i have even one slightly undersize, I am in deep sh*t

Red emperor do not fit in the "bycatch" category in any way shape or form. Doesn't matter what size they are.

I was going to buy some small whiting one day from the co op for bait but thought better of it .As if the fisheries believe me .

I noticed the same thing today. I was at 4 different seafood shops all run by our Asian locals around this area. And i can tell you i sat there and rough measuring every bream in their tub thing (using the thumb to pinkie method) i cam up with not one fish in there that would have been of a good legal size. Same again with the whiting.

It wasn't just the odd one or two... every fish was undersize. When i asked them about it every store just said that they were legal.

    Hmmm

Legal? but on what grounds? maybe these outlets should be taken to task as basically if every fish was undersize and walking away from it is sort of condoning the apparent practice of undersize fish.

Really time to put some fire into these people and sort out the legality one way or another.

    Cheers, Kerry.

This has been discussed before. Check this topic:

If you see something thats illegal ring the hotline. No shop should stock undersize fish.

another thing is the size limit in another state, i was told when i asked about muddies in a resteraunt that they buy them from NSW thats why they were so small

    Re: undersize fish

I understand the thing of some being allowed as a by-catch but these guys were pushing that. The problem is, whats the point in reporting the shop selling them? it had to have come from a trawler. So what can be done?

If its worth doing and you guys don't think i'm wasting my time calling the DPI then by all means i'll drop these guys in the shit. I'm sick of these locals taking over... sorry i'm not racist but i believe in controlling imigration.

    Re: undersize fish

Drop em in the sh.., well why not, but lets get this misconception corrected about undersize bream coming from a "trawler", sounds good might be the flavour of the month but most likely a misconception.

But if they are undersize then it is illegal to sell them, it is illegal for the seller to have been sold them, it's illegal for whoever caught them etc etc it simply doesn't come down to some "trawler", that's following along the stereotype thinking of some who can't (and don't want to) think outside the square.

Lets get one thing straight there are minimum legal limits and "by-catch" isn't some magical name given to be able to sell undersize fish. Undersize is undersize no matter how caught unless they have been farmed.

    Cheers, Kerry.

what is the legal length where you come from? its 8.5cm from inbetween the eyes to the back of the shell in NSW which isnt real big

    Re: undersize fish

i thought they were allowed a 10%size reduction on the size limits.

ie bream legal size 25cm (NSW)
    bream legal size for pros 25cm - 10% = 22.5cm
