$7.4M FOR RAMPS, DREDGING & JETTIES

Boaties throughout the State will benefit from a $7.4 million marine infrastructure program over the next financial year.

Transport Minister Paul Lucas said today's 2004-05 State Budget would enable Queensland Transport to start building several new boat ramps as well as continuing its upgrading program.

"Ramps are being planned for Hervey Bay, at Inarlinga in the Johnstone Shire, and at Pumpkin Creek in the Livingstone Shire," Mr Lucas said.

"Queensland Transport will spend $650,000 in 2004-05 to provide these ramps as part of the Boating Infrastructure Capital Program."

Queensland Transport provides recreational boating infrastructure along the State's 7400 kilometres of mainland coastline, as well as many inland waterways and islands, for Queensland's 180,000 registered recreational vessels.

The Statewide Boating Infrastructure Capital program for new capital projects in 2004-05 includes:

* $2 million to dredge the Coomera River and Northern Channel of the Broadwater at the Gold Coast;
* A major dredging strategy project at Port Douglas;
* Works on the Gold Coast sand bypass jetty; and
* An upgrade of the William Gunn jetty at Manly.

"This program is essential to improve access for recreational vessel owners throughout Queensland," Mr Lucas said.

"The State Government and local authorities are co-operating to deliver better facilities for boaties throughout the State.

"Queensland Transport provides ramps and their navigation aids, while local governments provide the land-based infrastructure, including access roads, car and trailer parking."

Mr Lucas said new public boat launching facilities could include a complete new facility, ramp widening or relocation and protective rock walls.

Decisions about additional boating infrastructure are based on a range of factors including analysis of boat registrations, expected population changes, and information from councils and boating groups.

Maritime Safety Queensland conducts recreational boating surveys every two years.

I am reading this right, $650,000 for 3 ramps? ???
I wouldn't mind that contract. I would have thought you could get at least 10 ramps for that.
And no mention of dredging the mouth of the Noosa river I see.

180.000 recreational boaties in QLD

If all of the boats where under 4.5 ($A57.25 ea) we have paid them (Qld Gov) $8,136,000.
If the boats where 4.51m - 6m ($A91.20 ea) we have paid them (Qld Gov) $14,256,000.
If the boats where 6.01m - 10m ($A125.10 ea) we have paid them (QLD Gov) $20,358,000

Average of the three boat sizes = $14,250,000. now I know that is not a very accurate way to calculate it out bit it gives you an idea. Where has the rest of The money raised from registration of recreational ships gone ??

PS, all calculations has been made with the $12 restocking fee subtracted from the registration fee, which is why if you do the calculations from my figures they don't add up. Clear as mud ?

Its not a restocking fee. I can tell you that SFA goes to fish stocking from the PPV levy, when, I believe, 17% is supposed to.

The Rollingstone Creek boatramp - single lane with no fanfare - cost $200,000 five years ago.

Don't be surprised by the price per ramp. Just look at what the Government pays for recarpeting a room for instance. I could carpet my whole houe both my neighbours and still have enough for a week at Hayman. At least that is the figure they show. I have supplied Government bodies with equipment and they screw the price right down. I gave up quoting. At the price they wanted to pay I wouldn't have been around to provide service. Most of the price is "administration and planning" We are soooooo lucky to have such talented people in charge.

It might just look like a chunk of concrete laid on a slope, but a ramp is a hightech bit of gear
Much more goes into one than your average 2 story house, thats why they cost so much more.

Can tell you that none of that money goes directly into restocking. We've been trying to find out where the hell it does actually go for some time but cant get a straight answer.

DPI&F does give funds for restocking however this is allocated within DPI&F budget & has been in place prior to the PPV levy with no increase.

I think you guys are showing your cynical streak, there's alot to be paid for - cars for family members, remodelling offices, seats to be shined, make-up for media releases, bottles of wine for airplane flights into alcohol restricted areas, that leaves very little for those minor issues like maintaining healthy sustainable inland fisheries, provididng infrastructure for all those who obviously have too much time on their hands and would like to put a boat in the water with relative ease, safety and security.

All in all a bit much too ask....NOT.
