    Another conspiracy theory??

I don't know how many of you are aware that ABC Radio North, from 22nd to 29th June ran a web site poll (poll number 97) which asked the question

"Are you happy with the new maps showing protected fishing zones in the great barrier reef".

Seemed like a fair question and a result we could follow with interest.

Now a funny thing happened, up to Friday 25th only about 15% of those responding were happy (3 days), on the 26th June the GBRMPA guys appeared on the 4K1G Fishing show and basically had to eat a bit of humble pie as so many errors where pointed out on the maps that these 2 guys. Senior GBRPMA people, had to admit, in public, for the first time, that not all the green zone co-ordinates have been printed on the maps as has been widely publicied by GBRMPA.

With this now general knowledge amongst the rec fishing community one might expect the general approval level of the maps to actually go down...bugger me if not at 8.30am sharp on Monday morning(office hours) the YES vote started to rise and by Monday arvo, after 5 days of polling the steady 15% YES vote had risen to an overall % of 45% YES..now thats a lot of votes!!

On Tuesday morning at exactly 8.30 again the YES vote went into overdrive, reaching 49% by 9am, when the rush of yes votes suddenly stopped. At 11am the YES vote took off again until 1pm (lunch time in a particular government office??).
At 2 pm it started again until 2.30 when the voting stopped and the poll concluded at 3.pm.

Bugger me if the overall percentage of YES votes was now 58% saying YES the maps are great and only 41% saying the maps are a crock of sh.. Sorry, saying that maps are not good.

GBRMPA were able to trumpet the results of this poll as proof of how well the maps are being accepted into the community. Community consultation at its very best.

Now who would do such a thing and deliberately and with,
I might add very powerful computer ability, working within an office timetable framework be so naughty as to manipulate an ABC poll?

One of the nice things about rec fishos getting organised is some amazingly talented people have joined the party. One in particular with the zeal, computer smarts and mathematical ability to monitor this sham at the time it was going on and give us the base information which will actually be able to prove whose computer manipulated the poll.

Watch This Space...............this could get REALLY interesting

Love the intrigue . The fishing party meeting in Cairns had me wondering how many gov and irridesent(sp) stooges were in attendance, there aint no way GBRMPA alone would let it pass unattended i am sure.
I had someone very nonreactive beside me who was taking short notes.
Who knows what's behind the aluminium (iron) curtain. 8) 8) 8)nq

Would be interesting to see the ip log of the votes made then, see if a lot did come from the same computer and/or network

    Heya KC

It's not difficult to manipulate the results of public polls online.
There are a number of ways it could be automated but the most probable and easiest is by email. eg WWF member mailout "website x (link) is having a poll on the new GBRMP boundaries get over there and have your say" Which way do you think they will vote?

Dropping a post into a forum that is pro issue will also get results. Without seeing the logs to know the origin of the clicks you are left guessing.

Just an aside, I don't know if you have seen this yet but when I went looking for the poll to see the one you are speaking of I also noticed this one here,
    http://www.abc.net.au/farnorth/
Would you vote for a Fishing Party at the upcoming Federal Election,
    Yes
    No
I don't believe in single issue parties

I would think that with a federal election possibly only 5 weeks away the fishing party should do well in this poll.

    Re: Another conspiracy theory??

Above poll currently at 26% yes vote. Not bad.
Any fishing is good fishing (should probably say Any fishing is...probably going to be illegal soon)

    Re: Another conspiracy theory??

26% would be nice!! JUst a little point. We have evidence that all the Yes votes came from the same computer or office. It was not as a result of "rallying the troops" so that they all got on and voted. THe IP logs will tell the story & moves are afoot to have these examined. Like I said...watch this space. This is going to be a "hotty". Theer is going to be a very big "Please Explain" asked of the person or agency responsible.

    Re: Another conspiracy theory??

hehe I'll be watching for the outcome of this :-) Let me know if I can be of assistance. I have over 10 years of online software development and could show you how to whip up an application that submits as many votes as you like in a very short period of time.... (obviously I wouldn't do this for ethical reasons, however technically it's very simple)

To assist in making the votes more realistic they really need to ensure that only 1 vote per IP address is logged... Even then it wouldn't be too difficult to work around, however at least it would require a little more brainpower to achieve...
    Cheers,

    Re: Another conspiracy theory??

I'll bet that if no-one actually answered a poll the end result would be a resounding yes. The days of computing put a noose around the neck of phone polls, and those accepting emails. Polls mean nothing these days, just tom foolery. Max

    Re: Another conspiracy theory??

Yes & no! Polls like this have no real legal credibility but when the results are used as part of the propogander campaign being staged by GBRMPA to tell the public, both here and down South, that they are doing a great job and the masses are accpeting things like the maps.....then a poll does mean something. If the poll is being manipulated and IF someone who has something to gain is ultimately resonsible for that manipulation then this will clearly be an issue of interest to the powers that be...and more importantly an issue the media will get involved in.

I have to say the ONLY time a poll like this does have a meaning is when proof of dirty tricks can be made public. This will happen over the next few days.

Proof already exists that someone manipulated the poll. It will take an IT expert or investigative journalist to discovery who!

    Re: Another conspiracy theory??

Well obviously there's some worried little chooks, who still have heads but then what's new same continuing lies, deceit and BS.

So time to see if some actually have the guts enough to explain.

    Cheers, Kerry.

    Re: Another conspiracy theory??

Watch this space. The background, information and evidence were submitted to a 7.30 report researcher on Tuesday afternoon. They are clearly interested because it has all the political sculldugery (wrong spelling I'm sure) that they love and it brings into question the integrity of an ABC poll.

Stay tuned viewers. More to follow as they look into the matter. IF it was not a GBRMPA computer manipulating the poll then this will really not go anywhere. If it was however there will be blood on the floor.
