    Whale spotting at Balgal Beach

Motoring back from the Palm Islands on Tuesday after a short but successful session chasing doggies and GTs, in the distance we spotted what looked like whales leaping high out of the water. When we got a couple of hundred yards away, about 6km off Balgal Beach, we found a female humpback and calf swimming north towards Hinchinbrook. We kept up with them from a safe distance and took a few shots (bloody digitals and their "delay" made this difficult!). Then we lost sight of them. Stopped the boat to get a bearing and looked up and they were about 25m away coming straight at us. Just before they were about to take us out with a tail flick they went under us and resurfaced about 20m in front then kept swimming north. Tried to get the shot of a lifetime but I'd filled the bloody memory!

Saw a couple of these out wide off Cairns yesterday. There seems to be a few about at the moment. Try to find some again on Sunday when I take the family out. Wife and kids keen to see a whale or two. I hope to see a trout or ten also.

    Good stuff Whiteman,

See the paper this morning had a pic of one right off harbour mouth.
I keep missing them this yr, looking forward to spotting one with the kids.

Chico, it may look like it, but he's taken the long way home if that's Double island off Cairns

It's probably Acheron Island. Not quite the right shape for Orpheus. I was driving, wife was shooting.
