Motoring back from the Palm Islands on Tuesday after a short but successful session chasing doggies and GTs, in the distance we spotted what looked like whales leaping high out of the water. When we got a couple of hundred yards away, about 6km off Balgal Beach, we found a female humpback and calf swimming north towards Hinchinbrook. We kept up with them from a safe distance and took a few shots (bloody digitals and their "delay" made this difficult!). Then we lost sight of them. Stopped the boat to get a bearing and looked up and they were about 25m away coming straight at us. Just before they were about to take us out with a tail flick they went under us and resurfaced about 20m in front then kept swimming north. Tried to get the shot of a lifetime but I'd filled the bloody memory!
