But its frustrating when someone comments but will not substantiate them, or answer your questions.

Guys you have to stop and think about the Fishing Party it does not have a support base from a narrow minded ideological sense. Rec fishers are a mixture of the whole politic spectrum. Commies, Greenes, Socialists, Humanists, Liberals, Conservatives and Neo-conservatives all have Rec fishers in their ranks. You can't hope to please all of these people on any platform apart from Rec Fishing move away from it and every issue becomes a battle ground. As soon as you start to politicalise by giving preference votes you will lose support from opposing groups and some Rec fisher will start to see you as an elitist group to be fought against. This defeats the whole idea of a fishing party and puts Rec Fishing in a worse position to fight from than it is at present. Derek may be seeing some thing that the rest of us is missing when he says he is against the whole idea and he may believe that the fishing part is an unworkable compromise and he could be right, if attacking one another becomes the norm. For the fishing party to progress it needs to find neutral ground to stand its base on and that is the hard part.
I agree with your comment Tony re: personal side and being frustrated, its times like this we need to gather our thoughts before replying, (not having a go at you) i have done this myself, these days i tend to leave it until i feel satisfied my reply will be read the way i write it, but then as i said, its all up to interpretation, and thats frustration. And this rezoning thing is all interpretation, as it appears, each party and dpi, don't know the real interpretation, so where does it leave us the rec fishers. aarggggghhh, now i'm frustrated.
cheers
Joe.
To me, closure was started by the the Liberals in England around the 16th century when they took public grasing ground and enclosed for rich farmers to buy.
Now we have the start of the same idea in the ocean. Enclosure stops the public using it, after a while when the "reasons for closures" dissapear through "good" management the closed zones can be reopened under license to those who can afford the license. A total rip off of peoples rights in order to give profits to bigg business and gain more control of peoples lives.
Fish farming is part of future planning, to make fish farming viable ocean has to be enclosed the same as farm land was. BUT! If any government just went ahead and closed vast areas for fish farming there would be hell to pay, every green in the country be out in their canoes holding hands with the rec fishers. So now we are seeing the sneaky approach take it all for the "good of the environment" then little by little lease it out and by the time it is all leased out people will just accept it.
Why are all the countries extending their sea zones? It is not only for oil and mineral rights but for fish farming as well, once it starts Rec Fishers will have to move beyond the 300klm zone before dropping a line, so make sure your passports are up to date before going fishing.
"I'd say since we climbed down out of the trees and most of us learned to use our opposing thumbs to hold a spear!!!!!!!!
Hunting is a natural human instinct."
Most pople born in a western society in the 20th century could not hunt to survive with what they born with or even make spears etc to capture food..but an instinct is far different fro ma right..and we must remember that with every right there is a responsibility.
As for Mr Barnaby Joyce...now that he will be a Senator for the next 6 years do we think that he will honour any deals done with anyone that does not have representation in either House ?
And that's not at all a thought that should be brushed off as GBRMPA are certainly on a self funding type of drive (by direction) and anything they can get their hands on has been gone over several times over.Originally Posted by Glug
Even now some operators are required to make TWO applications for the same licence and basically paying TWO licences for the same service, one to the State and one to GBRMPA and any man made "structure" is apparently on the GBRMPA shopping list and this one does open up a can of worms.

The stuff we see at Queensland fisheries is at its best 2 years old. It just takes that long to collect the data then work out the findings.
I'd love to see more money go into that area cause everyone would love to make truely informed decision with the best information when considering the future of the resource.
Gents, some of the figures in relation to fish stocks are really scary AND THEY'RE TWO YEARS OLD.
Like Jaybee said - if we bit the bullet in the 60s or 70s we wouldn't be facing some of the dire straights we are facing now. Snapper and Tailor are quite literally teetering on the edge in Queensland.

Thats where I feel the best solutions are, in fisheries managment and research, rather than locking people out of areas. Lock outs don't do much to protect the reef.
Regards, Tony
Lock outs can do more harm in some cases. For example the rapid growth population of giant jellyfish feeding of hatchlings in some parts of Japan were only picked up by professional fishers. Their catches dropped to a third because fish numbers were down and because the huge jelly fish were filling the nets.
Global warning is being blamed as these jelly fish sort of walk across the ocean floor leaving a new growth plant at every footstep to emit more jellyfish spores, which in turn starts walking and emiting spores. They have prooved that procreation increases as water temperature increase but as yet have no solution to the problem and suggest that certain speices of fish will be wiped out completly in these affected areas.
The increase of jelly fish could also be in part due to overfishing as fish feed on the jelly fish spores, the important thing here is monitoring had picked up the drop in fish numbers but not the jellyfish increase. With closures these changes can develope and spread faster without any one knowing about it until too late.
From what I understand the fisho have been complaining about the increase in size and numbers of these jelly fish for some time but fishery departments just ignored it until catch sizes dropped to a third. Japan is not the only country with this problem other areas around the world with similar water temperature increases are having the same problem and in each case fisho are the ones who have found it first. With closure whole eco systems can be lost before any one notices, as no government can afford to monitor the huge closure areas suggested effectively.

Look Im all for conservation but what Seahunt says is right. I live in a professional fisherman haven and the amount of damage these guys do to all fish is shocking. I have seen pros watching the seconds tick down till barra season opens then whack net the creeks till theres nothing left in the creek for weeks.
I have seen them come back from the reef with over 2000 live trout barra cod and wrasse from a five day stint and that is just one boat. I have fisghed ever since I was young enough to remember and I reckon these guys catch more fish in a year than I would ever hope to catch in 2 lifetimes.
I have even seen mounds of barra skeletons with half the fillet left on in a kowanyama creek from lazy pros who leave half a fillet behind becuse they have got so many fish.
But yet still recies are the ones who are severely regulated. Let the pros winge and complain because I will be happy when they are all gone so there will be plenty of fish left for a feed.
I tell you what if I took the conservation minister for a dive and showed him a dugong sunk by a sand anchor because it got caught in a net do you think it would change their minds?
