returning little fishes to the deep

On all the reading in kill/not to kill people are talking about returning fish to the depths. How do you do that piercing thingy???
Any other hints will be graciously accepted also

I haven't read the other post so not sure if this is what you mean by peircing thing. But here it is. I use a ball pump needle that's been sanded to a point.

Im going to the library tomorrow to get a book out on fish anatomy and physiology.
